Central Workshop BITS PILANI
About us
The Central Workshop at BITS Pilani is a vibrant hub of creativity, innovation, and hands-on learning. Designed to inspire both students and professionals, it merges theoretical knowledge with practical experience to promote holistic education. Spread across 1850 sq.m on the ground floor and 750 sq.m on the first floor, the workshop is equipped with both conventional and non-conventional machines, supporting a wide range of manufacturing activities. It houses specialized labs in CNC machining, welding, metrology, and 3D printing, making it a truly multidisciplinary facility. Each year, over 1,200 first-year undergraduate students receive foundational training in essential manufacturing techniques. These early experiences not only introduce students to the art and science of manufacturing but also build confidence to take on complex product design and fabrication challenges in the future. UG Students from Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering further enhance their skills in advanced domains such as: Wire EDM, 4 axis CNC, 3D Scanner, X-ray material testing, Ultrasonic Flaw Detector etc. In addition, Graduate students( M.E. students) and research scholars regularly utilize the Central Workshop for both coursework and research projects, benefiting from the workshop’s technical resources and expert support.
Message from the Unit Chief, Central Workshop – BITS Pilani
Prof. Abhijeet K. Digalwar, Unit Chief
Welcome to the Central Workshop at BITS Pilani—a hub of experiential learning, innovation, and technical excellence. Our workshop offers a dynamic environment where students from diverse disciplines engage in hands-on activities ranging from basic machining, carpentry, and welding to advanced machining and additive manufacturing. Through courses such as Workshop Practice and Advanced Manufacturing Processes, we ensure that students are proficient in both conventional and modern manufacturing techniques. Beyond academics, the Central Workshop actively supports research initiatives , student-led projects and institute maintenance work by providing fabrication services and technical expertise. As we continue to grow and adapt to emerging technologies, our mission remains clear: to empower students with the skills and knowledge required to thrive in the evolving world of engineering and technology.
