Intellectual Property Enablement and Commercialization

IPEC at BITS Pilani 

The Intellectual Property Enablement and Commercialization (IPEC) division at BITS Pilani serves as a hub for managing Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and facilitating Technology Transfer. IPEC is committed to fostering innovation and ensuring impactful commercialization of research. The program is coordinated by Prof. Deepak Chitkara, who oversees both domains with strategic insight and dedication.

Our Mission

At IPEC, we strive to:

  • Empower faculty and researchers to protect and manage their intellectual property.

  • Facilitate the seamless transition of innovations from the lab to the market.

  • Promote a culture of creativity, collaboration, and commercialization.

Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)

The IPR Team plays a pivotal role in supporting faculty across all BITS campuses with their intellectual property needs. Key services include:

  • Invention Management: Guiding faculty through the entire IP lifecycle, from submitting the Invention Disclosure Form (IDF) to managing communication with external attorneys.

  • Patent Process Assistance: Supporting the drafting, filing, and maintenance of patents and other IP rights.

  • Progress Updates: Keeping faculty informed at every stage of the IP process.

  • Awareness Programs: Conducting workshops and initiatives to build awareness about intellectual property and its importance.

By streamlining the IP process and fostering awareness, the IPR team helps build a strong foundation for innovation protection at BITS Pilani.

Technology Transfer

The Technology Transfer Team bridges the gap between academic research and industrial application. Their efforts focus on ensuring that innovations developed within the institution reach their full potential in the marketplace. Key activities include:

  • Industry Connections: Facilitating partnerships and connecting faculty with industry leads.

  • Advisory Services: Offering expert guidance on IP negotiations, venture creation, and commercialization strategies.

  • Contract Management: Handling agreements, contracts, and licensing arrangements with professionalism and transparency.

  • Policy Interpretation: Assisting faculty in understanding institutional policies and guidelines related to technology transfer.

The team’s holistic approach ensures that faculty have the tools and resources needed to bring their ideas to life beyond the academic setting.

The synergy between the IPR and Technology Transfer teams ensures an integrated approach to managing, protecting, and commercializing intellectual property. Operating in strict adherence to BITS Pilani’s Intellectual Property Policy and Guidelines, IPEC is dedicated to maintaining transparency, efficiency, and legal compliance in all its processes.
