Civil Engineering is one of the oldest, broadest, and rapidly-growing disciplines of Engineering. Major sub-disciplines in Civil Engineering education are structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, water resource engineering, construction technology and management, and environmental engineering. While the traditional side of civil engineering education focuses on structures, buildings and bridges, foundations, ports and waterways, energy and industrial facilities, and transportation, there is now a growing trend to branch into other areas of critical importance to society like futuristic transportation systems, sustainability of the built environment, smart cities, infrastructure management, disaster recovery, application of artificial intelligence and 3D printing of structures. These areas have also become important components of today’s Civil Engineering education. The upcoming decade will be a challenging as well as an exciting time to choose civil engineering as a career, paving the path to improve the global quality of life on this planet.
