The project aims to develop baseline data for the Pandanus (Screw pine or Kewda) ecosystem in Goa covering the aspects of distribution, habitat suitability, ecosystem services and socio-economic importance. A major component of the project is the assessment of the potential for Pandanus based local livelihood opportunities in Goa considering the uses of the plant where the flowers are used in perfume industry, leaves in craft making, fibers in textiles, edible fruits etc.
Pandanus forests can act as a barrier to cyclonic storm surges and winds and its root system stabilizes beaches and dune sediments. It also provides habitat to wildlife. Thus, conserving and promoting Pandanus ecosystem can provide adaptation related solutions to societal challenges emanating from the emerging risk of climate change in a coastal geography.

Nutraceuticals are nature’s gift to human beings as a unique blend of “nutrition” and “pharmaceuticals”. It represents a rapidly growing field at the intersection of food and medicine. These biologically active compounds, derived from natural sources such as plants, animals, microbes, offer health benefits beyond basic nutrition, addressing a wide range of chronic and lifestyle-related conditions. From functional foods and dietary supplements to bioactive compounds, nutraceuticals are reshaping the landscape of preventive healthcare and wellness. India holds a prominent position in the nutraceutical market, ranking among the top global players. With a market size exceeding $10 billion in 2023, India is expected to grow at a CAGR of over 15%, outpacing the global average. India is not only a significant consumer but also a major exporter of nutraceutical products, supplying herbal supplements and functional foods to global markets. At BITS Pilani, we are addressing the critical challenges associated with Nutraceuticals.
