What motivated you to pursue a career in tech consulting, and how did your education and college experiences further shape this decision?
I was drawn to tech consulting because it combines my passion for technology with problem-solving and strategic thinking. The opportunity to work across various industries, solving complex business challenges through technology, was appealing. My education provided a strong foundation in technical skills, but it was the collaborative projects, internships, and extracurricular activities during college that honed my ability to apply this knowledge in real-world scenarios. The exposure to different perspectives and the chance to work on diverse teams shaped my decision to pursue a career in this dynamic field.
What technical skills do you consider crucial for succeeding as a tech consultant? Were there any courses that aided in your success?
Crucial technical skills for tech consulting include proficiency in programming languages (like Python and Java), understanding cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), data analytics, and cybersecurity. Equally important are soft skills such as communication, problem-solving, and project management. Courses in computer science, cloud security, and cybersecurity, in particular, were instrumental in building my technical expertise. Additionally, business-oriented courses helped me understand how to align technology solutions with business goals.
With the emergence of Gen AI, what do you see as the most significant emerging trends in tech consulting over the next few years?
The rise of Gen AI is likely to drive significant changes in tech consulting, with trends like hyper-automation, AI-driven decision-making, and personalized customer experiences at the forefront. Consultants will increasingly leverage AI to automate routine tasks, analyze vast amounts of data, and provide insights that were previously unattainable. This will require a deep understanding of AI tools and frameworks, as well as the ability to translate complex technical concepts into actionable business strategies. Ethical considerations around AI usage will also become more prominent, necessitating consultants to be well-versed in responsible AI practices. We at EY have developed a Responsible AI offering for industries.
What advice would you give to the younger generation for maintaining academic excellence with extracurricular pursuits?
Balancing academics with extracurriculars is about time management and prioritization. Identify your core interests and focus on activities that align with your long-term goals. It’s important to set realistic targets, break them down into manageable tasks, and consistently work towards them. Don’t shy away from seeking help from peers, mentors, or professors when needed. Remember, extracurriculars are not just about building a resume but also about personal growth and networking. They can offer a break from academics while also teaching valuable skills like teamwork and leadership. Plus, get as much industry experience as possible; that is what works in the real world.
What advice would you give to the current generation who are interested in pursuing a career in tech consulting? How can students make the most of their college experience to prepare for a career in this field?
For those interested in tech consulting, it’s important to build a strong technical foundation while also developing business acumen. Take advantage of internships and industry projects to gain practical experience. Networking is key—connect with alumni, attend industry events, and participate in student organizations related to technology and consulting. Don’t hesitate to take on leadership roles in college clubs or group projects, as they help in developing critical soft skills. Finally, stay curious and keep learning, as tech consulting is a field that evolves rapidly. Work on case studies and guesstimates to prepare for interviews and broaden your thinking.
What are some of your fondest college memories?
I cherish the late-night brainstorming sessions with friends, the excitement of building something new, and the camaraderie built during group projects. Those experiences not only strengthened my technical skills but also created lasting friendships.
