Overview

We are one of the major engineering departments in the country, which has always led research from the front. Our faculty and through them, our students are involved in extensive research spanning topics such as Transportation, Geotechnical and Water Resources. We also disseminate the knowledge we gather by regularly organising national conferences and workshops. We engage regularly with industry by providing refresher courses and distance learning options.

The department disseminates the knowledge regularly by organizing national conferences and workshops. It also organizes special/ refresher courses for various categories of participants including those specific to target industry. Department is engaged in several Collaborative programs with the Industry through Distance Learning Program Division of BITS, Pilani.

Research

The department is involved in various research areas in order solve new or existing problems, prove new ideas, or develop new theories. The various areas of research are as follows:

• Transportation Engineering: Rural accessibility planning; Urban planning using Genetic algorithm; Optimization in Airport planning; Mass and Rapid Transportation System
• Geotechnical Engineering: Soil-Structure Interaction; Piled-Raft Foundations; Soil Reinforcement; Ground Improvement; Reinforced Earth; Physico-chemical properties of soil; Ultrasonic testing of soils
• Geographical Information Systems: Remote Sensing and Image Processing; Artificial Intelligence and Expert system
• Water Resources Engineering: Reservoir Optimization; Drip Irrigation; Water Quality Management; Water Shed Management; Application of Fuzzy Logic and Artificial Neural Networks and MCDM
• Earthquake Engineering: Disaster Management
• Structural Engineering: Composite Structures; Application of Finite Element Analysis

Courses

Currently the Department of Civil Engineering is offering the five different degrees under first Degree, higher degree and Doctoral programmes in Pilani Campus. The programmes offered are as follows:
