Lights, Camera, Mayhem!
It is that time of the year again, when the campus is charged with electricity that is almost palpable in the air. Day Zero of Waves 2014 ushered in a 3 day period of high octane excitement, melodrama and MAYHEM which promises to be unforgettable.
The guests were treated to the first of BITS’ cultural traits, that is, high standards of punctuality as the inaugural began at 7pm. Director Prof. K. E. Raman welcomed the Chief Guest, Mr. K.R. Srinivasa, Chief Editor of the Times of India, and the Guests of Honor, the founders of Art Escape. The Guests then, along with the Director, CSA President and Waves Convener marked the inauguration of the fest by the auspicious lighting of a lamp in honor of Goddess Saraswati. The President of CSA, Anmol Shrivastava, then talked about the journey of Waves from its very genesis to the attainment of its present stature as one of the fastest growing cultural fest in India. The Chief Guest addressed the students with an inspiring speech and declared Waves 2014 officially open. Vinesh, co-founder of Art Escape, then took to the microphone and told the audience about how Art Escape serves as a platform for independent artists.
The convener of Waves Abhishek Mohta outlined the struggles involved in the process of organizing a fest and congratulated the organizing committee for successfully pulling of the preparations. In order to honor Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel on the occasion of his birthday, a pledge was taken, to instill a sense of national unity amongst the audience.
A plethora of cultural delights started off with a scintillating performance by the dance club. Maitri and Jai held the audience spellbound with their energetic display of finer nuances of the classical dance form; Bharatnatyam. Members of Kala, the art club, then took to the stage and mesmerized the audience with a spontaneous display of creativity working in tandem to create beautiful art on canvas.
The highlight of the cultural program was the performance by the Mime Club. In a display of sheer ingenuity the Mime Club presented the age old adage, which tells us to live life on one’s own terms in a manner which captivated the issues faced by Bitsians were highlighted through humor. The mime club got a standing ovation for their brilliant performance and the inaugural ceremony was wrapped up by the recitation of our National Anthem.

The SERC(Science and Engineering Research Council, DST, Government of India, now known as SERB) schools in Theoretical High Energy Physics(THEP) are organized every year nationally. The aim is to provide an overview on different current topics in high energy physics to the Ph.D students in their early years of research. Each school has pedagogical lectures on selected topics supported by rigorous tutorial sessions.
This year the XXIX SERC Main school in Theoretical High Energy Physics(SERCTHEP) will be organized by the Physics Department of BITS Pilani, K K Birla Goa Campus, Goa during the period December 20, 2014 to January 8, 2015.
The school is funded by SERB, Department of Science & Technology(DST), Govt. of India.

Conference on Decentralized Biogas Digesters
In light of rapidly rising costs associated with energy supply and waste disposal and increasing concerns with environmental quality degradation, conversion of organic wastes to energy is a more economically viable solution. Bioconversion technologies such as anaerobic digestion (AD) are more suitable compared to thermochemical conversion technologies such as combustion and gasification. AD is a biological process in which bacteria break down organic matter with biogas as the end product. AD is a promising technology which could effectively address the problem of waste disposal yielding valuable outputs like biogas and fertilizers. This conference will focus on the various anaerobic digestion technologies available and the methods to manage the slurry coming out of the digesters. This conference is organized to bring together researchers, scientists and professionals working in the field of biogas production so as to share experiences and to update technologies and to provide a platform for strong collaborative network among researchers, scientists, industrialists and end users. The conference to be held in Goa will provide a platform for the participants to share new approaches, knowledge and findings on biogas production and slurry management which are necessary for pollution control.
