Department of Chemical Engg, BITS Pilani K K Birla Goa campus, Goa, in collaboration with Goa State Pollution Control Board organized two day workshop on Environmental Management Systems for Industries in Goa on 20th October and 21st October 2016 at K K Birla Goa Campus. The workshop was aimed at providing to the working professions in Goa with the platform to enhance knowledge about best management practices for the reduction in all forms of pollution.
The chief guest for the inaugural function of the workshop was honorable Minister for Dept of Science and Technology, Govt of Goa Mrs. Alina Saldanha. Mrs Saldhanda in her speech emphasized industries role in sustainable development. She mentioned that industries must contribute towards clean water & sanitation; affordable & clean energy; innovation & infrastructure development; sustainable cities & communities; responsible consumption & production; and actions on climate change. She further mentioned that we must harness solar energy and non conventional energy sources for power generation. Mrs Saldhanda told that more efforts should be taken to preserve and conserve water resources which are otherwise getting polluted due to large anthropogenic activities. She also mentioned that the hotel industry in Goa is expected to address the pollution issue by laying stress not only on legal compliance but on recycling and reuse of waste by investing in modern technology for sustainable tourism. The Scientist from Goa State Pollution Control Board, Prof Mohan Girap, Guest of Honour for the workshop, highlighted the amendments in exiting environmental laws and induction of new environmental regulations for e-waste.

Bharat Ko Jaaniye Yatra
Recently participants of Bharat Ko Jaaniye Yatra, organized by Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India visited BITS Pilani K K Birla Goa Campus. The group of 9 participants from South Africa, USA, Mauritius, Ireland, Qatar and Netherlands were welcomed by Deputy Director of BITS Goa, Prof. Ashwin Srinivasan.
Prof. Srinivas Krishnaswamy made a presentation introducing BITS University and its four campuses at Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad and Dubai to the participants. He spoke about the history of BITS and admission process followed at its campuses. Prof. Mridula Goel made a presentation about Entrepreneurial Leadership at BITS Goa Campus. Later 2 students, Mr. Akshay Sonankar and Shaikh Saif made presentations about their projects. Akshay spoke about a unique product innovated by his team. The product – Hitchtag, helps in locating valuable mis-placed items such as luggage, wallet, phones, etc. While Saif spoke about the Mudra Project which is in the process of designing a teaching tool for teachers of visually impaired persons.
The participants also visited the state-or-the-art Tele-presence conference room and seminar hall. Participants were given a demonstration of how Tele-presence facility connects all four BITS campuses in real time through audio and video. Regular classes and meetings across the four campuses are held using this high-end video-conferencing facility.
Deputy Registrar, Mr. Sailesh Narayan Mohanty and PRO, Mr. Arjun Halarnkar were also present for the function. The visit was facilitated and arranged by the NRI Commission of Goa.
