    From its humble origin in 2007, Waves has come a long way, evolving into one of the largest cultural festivals of the country. With scintillating performances by the country’s best artists every year, Waves 2012 went international.And now, after scaling unmapped heights and astounding many a great minds, Waves 2013 is ready to surpass its predecessors and give the country a festival to remember.
     
    This year, Waves takes you on a journey, a journey from where it all began to everything it has become today. Waves 2013, “Hit the Rewind”, is a celebration of the best of art, music, literature and films the world has ever seen. Join us as we go back and walk through the defining points of cultural history, be it the iconic moonwalk,The Beatles (who redefined rock music in the 1960s),six people in a coffee house, a whirlwind blood saga of the American Mafia (what we know as The Godfather), Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet,Jimi Hendrix and Marilyn Monroe. Waves 2013 has a story to tell, a story of greatness, a story of how over the century legends revolutionized art and how we see it. So, press the rewind button, sit back and let this tale drown you in a sea of nostalgia and reminiscence.

    A workshop on Higgs boson and top quark physics

    BITS Pilani, K K Birla Goa Campus organized a 3 day workshop from 25th – 27th February, 2013 on Higgs boson and top quark physics: HIGGSTOP-2013.
     
    With 39 participants(6 Postdoctoral fellows and  19 PhD scholars) from 5 countries and eminent speakers from USA, Taiwan and from different parts of India, BITS Pilani in collaboration with RECAPP (Regional Center for Accelerator based Particle Physics), Harish-Chandra Research Institute(HRI, a autonomous DAE Institute), Allahabad and Department of Science & Technology(DST), Government of India jointly  organize the workshop, HiggStop-2013. Inaugurated by Prof. BiswarupMukhopadhyaya, RECAPP, HRI (Allahabad), Prof. K.E.Raman welcomed the participants.

    Although officially the workshop started on 25th February, the tune of the workshop was set by Prof. SreerupRaychaudhuri (TIFR, Mumbai) through his public lecture on 22nd  February. The lecture was primarily intended to our undergraduate students: The evolution of science: starting from the age of stone he guided our students to the era of periodic table of elements and finally to the Higgs boson discovery at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, Switzerland  in July, 2012

    There were 5 keynote speakers, experts in their respective area. Prof. Bruce Mellado (LHC,CERN and University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA) gave a Skype talk on the recent LHC results: Experimental viewpoint. Prof. T. C. Yuan from Academia Sinica, Taiwan told us about how to distinguish various models of the 125-126 GeV Higgs boson.
    Prof. AnirbanKundu from University of Calcutta discussed about the recent developments in B physics in the post Higgs discovery period. Prof. Rahul Sinha throws light on how to identify the spin and parity of the newly found scalar boson.  Prof. ManasMaity (Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, CMS group, LHC) discussed at a length about how to search charged Higgs boson.
     
     In addition we have 9 talks from invited speakers. Dr. Prakash Mathews from Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata talked about Spin identification of resonances at the LHC to NLO QCD. Dr. AnindyaDatta from University of Calcutta discussed about the Vacuum Stability constraints on Universal Extra Dimensional Models in the light of Higgs: Discovery and its impact on LHC search. Prof. Sourov Roy from IACS, Kolkata discussed about SUSY Inverse Seesaw and its signatures at LHC. Prof. V. Ravindran from IMSc, Chennai discussed on the QCD effects in Higgs production. Dr. SudhirVempati from CHEP, IISc, Bangalore discusse several SUSY models in the light of LHC data. Dr. Srihari talked on vector-like fermion at the LHC, Dr. ParthaKonar discussed on the mass and spin determination at the LHC, Dr. Santosh K. Rai discussed coloured exotic quark searches at the LHC and Dr. Narendra K. Sahu discussed on the consequences of 125 GeV Higgs for Asymmetric Dark Matter and Leptogenesis.  Besides these talks we have several brain storming discussion sessions, the purpose of which was  to initiate new direction of research, new project work.

    Coordinated by Drs. Prasanta Kumar Das(Convener), V. Sunil Kumar, P. Nandakumar, Chandradew Sharma, Madhu K, Tarun Kr.  Jha, Ram S. Patel, E. S. Kannan and their teams made the program a success.

    Do we always get what we want?

    Workshop  on Negotiations and Negotiating

    “We negotiate everyday at home and at office though we may not sit at a table for the process of negotiating”saidMr. Peter Francis Xavier D’Lima, the former director, President and CEO of the Goa Institute of Management who inaugurated the workshop on “Negotiations and Negotiating” organized by the Department of Humanities and Management at the Goa campus of BITS Pilani on 8th March 2013. Conducted by D J Sarkar, Project PSCM Manager atBP, UK, the workshop aims to impart skills in commercial negotiations. The workshop is structured to offer insights to those who are new to negotiating in a business environment. Apart from the interactive exercises and role-playing, the facilitator uses live examples from his experience to demonstrate the subtle nuances of negotiating. While Day 1 is meant for business managers, Day 2 is for students.

    Coordinated by Dr.BasavadattaMitra of the Department of Humanities and Management, the workshop witnessed the participation of about 25 managers from 11 organizations in Goa:Sanofi Pharmaceuticals, Smart Link Network Systems, GMI ZarhakMoulders, VergoPharma Research Lab, Wockhardt, Nestle, Pentair, Berger Becker Coatings, M/s. Parle (Exports) Pvt. Ltd, V.M.Salgaocar&Bro.Pvt.Ltd., and House of Rajaram N.S Bandekar. On 9th March, 46 students from BITS Pilani Goa campus, Goa University and GITIC ( Goa IT Innovation Centre at Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industries) participated in various activities based on negotiation case studies and enjoyed learning the process of negotiation.

    Before introducing the theme of the workshop, Prof. Meenakshi Raman HoD, Humanities and Management presented a brief overview of the department. She emphasized that negotiation is an integral part of all businesses and it enables the businesses to thrive and grow continuously. Prof. Sutapa Roy Ramanan, Assistant Dean of the Practice School Division of BITS Pilani, K KBirla Goa Campus, elaborated on the Practice School Scheme that aims at enabling students to put the classroom concepts into industrial applications.

    International Workshop on Data Analytics & Applications 2013 (IWDAA 2013) was successfully held at BITS-Pilani, KK Birla Goa Campus from 26th February to 1st March, 2013. Jointly organized by Departments of Computer Science and Information Systems of Pilani and KK Birla Goa campuses, IWDAA attracted more than 50 external participants and 41 BITS students and faculty. The participants learnt about many ongoing trends and researches in field of data mining from a total of 13 speakers which included 6 academicians, 3 scientists, 2 entrepreneurs and 2 representatives from industry. Few participants from Pilani and Hyderabad campuses also attended the workshop via the Telepresence facility.
     
    IWDAA'13 was inaugurated by Prof. B.N. Jain, Vice-chancellor, BITS-Pilani along with Prof. G. Raghurama, Director, Pilani campus and Prof. K.E. Raman, Director, KK Birla Goa Campus through Telepresence facility. While first day was dedicated to ongoing and future trends in data analytics, the second day was devoted to diverse applications of data analytics. Following day saw speakers talking about challenges and innovative solutions for efficient web mining and information retrieval. Last day focus was on High Performance Computing and its ever increasing role in solving Big Data related problems.
     
    This 4 day long workshop not only enhanced participants' knowledge in concerned fields but also gave them ample opportunity to interact with experts. At the end of workshop, everybody agreed that the future will see unprecedented growth of data, and there is an urgent need to devise innovative solutions to manage and make best use of the new 'oil'.

    Applications invited for Project Assistants in EEE department

    Applications are invited for Project Assistant in the Department of EEE/E&I for the GAIL sponsored project on “Design & Development of Condition-based Monitoring of Pipelines using Wireless Sensor Networks” for a period of two years. The candidate should have completed or be currently pursuing his ME in Computer Science/ Embedded Systems. The candidate should have completed at least one course in the area of Network Embedded Systems. Knowledge of TinyOS is a prerequisite. The fellowship amount will be Rs 10,000 per month.

    This prestigious award was won by Prof. Dhananjay Madhukar Kulkarni from Bits Pilani K.K Birla Goa Campus in 2012.


    A certificate and a cash award of INR 100,000 will be awarded to the winner.
