First ever Inter District American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Student Professional Development Conference (SPDC)-20012 Final Competitions in DUBAI
Birla Institute of Technology & Science- Pilani, Dubai Campus (BPDC) hosted ASME SPDC-2012 for the Distinct-G (Asia-Pacific) during 7-8 April 2012. This is for the first time conducted in Dubai to have more networking of inter District students of various ASME Student Sections. Participating in the SPDC widens the view on the real world faced by engineers and gives the chance for students to couple their theoretical knowledge with practical applications.
In this conference, both the faculty and students from India, Pakistan and Taiwan participated. During these two days, Student design competition, Old Guard Oral Presentation, Poster Presentation and Technical Web Page Design were conducted for the winners in SPDC semifinals conducted in these countries,
The winners of these competitions will compete with the other ASME District toppers to secure the top ranks in the World. and also participate in International Mechanical Engineering Congress-2012(IMECH-2012) to be held in November 2012 in TEXAS, USA.
In addition to above these competitions, Student leadership and Business development seminars were conducted by ASME Senior Members Mr.Sumit Wadwa, Manager, 3 M Technologies, India, Mr.Usman, Entrepreneur, Pakistan, Mr.Vidur Khurana, chair, BPDC ASME Student Section and Mr.Faruk Sohail, Vice-Chair, District-G(Asia-Pacific).
The competitions were judged by ASME representatives Prof.Tariq, Head of Mechanical Engineering Department, Masdar Institute, Abu Dhabi, U.A.E. and, Mr.Usman, Entrepreneur, Pakistan along with Prof R K Mittal, Director, BPDC and Mechanical Engineering faculty, BPDC.
Mr. Liang Chia Wei, Mr.Tsai, Jhih Hong and Mr.Su, YU Jhih, Minhgshin University of Science & Technology, Taiwan won the student design competition. Mr. Kewal Dharamshi, IIT, Kanpur, India is the topper in Old Guard Oral Design competition,, Mr.Afraz Ahmed, University of Engineering & Technology, Pakistan won the Old Guard Poster competition and Mr.Himanshu Saxena, IIT, Roorkee, India won the Technical web page competition
This conference was inaugurated on 07-04-2012 by Mr.M.Riazuddin, Director, ETA-Net work of Education & training and welcomed all the participants.
Prof Mittal, Director, BPDC and Mr.M.Riazuddin, Director, ETA- Net work of Education & training attended the Awards Ceremony, held on 08-04-2012 and congratulated the winners and also Dr.M.V.N.Sankaram, BPDC ASME Faculty Advisor, Mr.Vidur Khurana, Student Chair, BPDC ASME for successfully organizing the event. He also thanked Mr.Hardik Tiwari, Chair, SDOB, District-G, Final year Mechanical Engineering student, BITS Pilani, India, because of whose initiative this conference was conducted successfully in BITS –Pilani, Dubai Campus.
In the closing ceremony, Dr.Chih-Hung Li, Director of International Affairs, Minghsin University of Science and Technology, Taiwan and Dr.Riffat Asim Pasha, University of Technology, Pakistan thanked the Management and BPDC ASME Student Section for their hospitality. BPDC Deans and faculty also participated in this occasion.
At the end of this ceremony, Mr.Faruk Sohail, Vice-Chair, ASME District-G presented a memento to BPDC for successfully serving as a host for the SPDC- 2012.
