3-DAY WORKSHOP ON “MEMS MODELLING WITH COMSOL" was a huge success at BPDC

The 3-days workshop on "Introduction to MEMS Modelling with COMSOL" during Dec 4 - 6, 2011 organised at BPDC conducted by Dr. N N Sharma was a huge success. Dr. Sharma is a renound faculty of Mechanical Engineering from BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus. The workshop by Dr. Sharma was designed to educate students and faculty from any engineering background to the exciting new emerging technologies and markets being developed in MEMS. In the inaugural workshop held in April 2011, an understanding of the basic principles underlying MEMS design, development and fabrication was provided. In this workshop, the application  of COMSOL, a more powerful software tool for the design, modelling and analysis of various MEMS structures and devices was explored.  Participants also had an insight into the various models governing these micro devices, where working principles are different from macro-scale electromechanical systems. Design of MEMS was illustrated with examples. Hands-on sessions provided the participants a unique opportunity to model their designs and simulate the performance of their MEMS device design. Around 95 total participents were there which included 69 students, 22 in house faculties & assistants and 4 out side faculties.

  • 5th Anniversary of BPDC foundation day has been celebrated with Ethnic day

5th Anniversary of BPDC foundation day has been celebrated with Ethnic day

Bits Pilani, Dubai Campus held joint celebrations in commemoration of Foundation Day and Ethnic Day on November 7. The day began with an air of expectancy, the campus atmosphere was pregnant with excitement and the now familiar and usual buzz as the campus community came together to kick off the day long festivities. The activity packed day started with the traditional game of Housie, attracting a large audience waiting at the edge of their seats for their number to be called. The next competition was the wildly popular game from the previous year’s Ethnic Day, Beg Borrow Steal. A wide spread treasure hunt, the aim of this competition is to obtain a list of random items within a time limit. The celebrations then moved to the auditorium, where the crowd was eagerly waiting for the formal festivities to begin. First up was a short and informative presentation on Foundation Day, marked on the 5th of November. The presentation sought to address historical facts and highlight some little known facets of the Institute’s campus. The hosts for the show, Prashant Vaidyanathan and Fahad Khan then announced the commencement of the Ethnic Day celebrations with an all girls, all years dance group performing on a variety of songs, defining the versatility and variety of the remainder of the evening. The Mr. and Ms Ethnic Student adjudication started next, as a coterie of gorgeously dressed ladies and spiffy men took over the stage. As a means of promoting greater regional integration and tolerance amongst the community, the judging process sought to use the event as a means of acclimatizing the community to the diversity of ethnicities and experiences represented. This was followed by the Mr. and Mrs. Ethnic Faculty competition. Mrs. Salma Sherrif and Mrs. Abha Mittal treated the audience to melodious renditions of songs for the crowd. Dr. B Vijay Kumar showcased his skills on the flute as he played a Hindustani classical Raga on it. Dr. Sankaram sang a devotional song for the audience. The highlight of the show however would have to be the impromptu dance performance staged by Mrs. Kalaichelvi in the midst of a performance to Chammak Challo by a boys’ collective. The crowd could not stop cheering her enthusiastic and inspired performance. The event came to a close with a round of appreciative applause in recognition of the superlative work put in by the organizers; Manshila Adhlakha, Niharika Pathak and the Dance and Art clubs for setting up a highly enjoyable event.
