    Nominations call for Distinguished Alumnus Awards – 2014

    Alumni Affairs Division of BITS Pilani solicits nominations for the “Distinguished Alumnus Awards – 2014” to recognize and honor those alumni who have brought laurels to their alma mater by making significant and outstanding contributions to their profession, their businesses, and/or to the society.

    Any living BITS alumnus who has completed a degree programme from any of the campuses of BITS and has made significant and outstanding contribution to one or more of the following fields (or categories) would be considered for the award:

    •  Professional management of businesses

    • Entrepreneurship

    • Academic teaching and/or research

    •  Public life or social entrepreneurship and

    • Philanthropy

    Any member of the General Body of BITS, the Board of Governors of BITS, BITS’ Senate, BITS’ administration or faculty, or of BITS Alumni Association may nominate an alumnus.

    The details of the award, eligibility criteria and nomination form can be requested from the Alumni Affairs Office via mail ( / The deadline for submission of nomination is 20th of May, 2014.

    BITS Pilani, India acquires BITS Pilani, Dubai Campus

    BITS Pilani, India, established its international branch campus in Dubai in the year 2000 to offer its Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctoral programs in the region. The campus was established in collaboration with ETA LLC Group, Dubai, which provided the infrastructural facilities and administrative support to the campus, while BITS Pilani managed the entire academic processes.
    BITS Pilani, Dubai Campus, the only international branch campus of BITS Pilani, India, expanded from 2 Undergraduate programs to 7 Undergraduate programs in Engineering and several Postgraduate programs and Doctoral programs. The student numbers grew from 64 in the year 2000 to more than 1500 students. 
    After 12 years of successful collaboration between BITS Pilani and ETA, Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani, India has recently acquired the infrastructure of Dubai Campus from ETA successfully, after duly meeting all the statutory requirements.
    Mr. Syed M. Salahuddin, Managing Director, ETA LLC, while highly appreciating the long and fruitful association with BITS Pilani said, “We have nurtured and supported with pride the establishment and growth of BITS Pilani in Dubai for 12 years and now we pass on the responsibility to BITS Pilani to take it to further heights of excellence in Engineering and Technology education in the Middle East region”.
    In this context, Prof. Bijendra N. Jain, Vice Chancellor, BITS Pilani, India, observed, "Now that BITS Pilani has taken full responsibility as an infrastructure-provider for its Dubai Campus, it will aggressively work to expand opportunities for education and applied research at its Dubai Campus, while continuing to improve the quality of instruction it delivers."
    “With this consolidation, the global BITS Pilani brand, well known for half a century for quality education, is looking forward to strengthening its Dubai Campus by expanding program offerings, student enrolment, faculty strength, research and community outreach activities, with a view to attracting best of talents to BITS Pilani, Dubai Campus”, said Prof. Ravi Kant Mittal, Director of Dubai Campus.
    BITS Pilani is very confident and optimistic about the growth prospects of its Dubai Campus and is rolling out strategies and plans in alignment with its Vision 2020 programme.

    Prof. Radha. K. Maheshwari visited to BITS Pilani, Dubai Campus

    Prof. Radha K. Maheshwari (Coordinator, Indo-USUHS activities) visited the Dubai campus between 16th and 26th December 2012. During the course of his visit Prof. Maheshwari delivered 7 lectures for the students and faculty of BITS Pilani, Dubai Campus (BPDC).
    In his different lecture sessions, he discussed about INDO-USUHS Programs, Development of second generation viral vaccines, Antimalarials, Co-Infections and Environmental Agents Increase Disease severity: Implication in Public Health, Micro RNA as Diagnostic Biomarkers in Traumatic brain injury, Role of angiogenesis in wound healing and cancer, Mechanisms of interferon induced inhibition of enveloped viruses including HIV, Grant and paper writing. He also interacted with the faculty & staff and discussed about teaching practices, research interests and ideas for future collaborations. He also interacted with the students of under graduate and post graduate courses and research scholars in the Department of Biotechnology and shared valuable insights into current research trends.
    He also guided the students on how to best focus their interests and discussed future education and career prospects. He also had an interaction with postgraduate students of all disciplines and discussion with special focus on research projects and ideas and the importance of scientific research in education.
    Meeting with Working Group (Research) was also one of the highlight of his visit. He discussed on how to encourage research focus in the campus and establish BPDC as a Center for excellence in various areas of research in the region. Focus was centered on interdisciplinary areas of research and possible project ideas were emphasized. Faculty from various departments (Electrical and Electronics, General Sciences, Mechanical, etc.) expressed their interest in working with USUHS and discussed their ideas with Prof. Maheshwari.

    BPDC won the best spirited college award in Debating Championships

    The Public Speaking and Literary Club of BPDC won 6 awards at the 9th American University of Sharjah Debating Championships.
    BPDC Debate Team 2 won the Runner's up award at the 9th AUS Debating Chamiponship.
    The team comprised of
    1) Mohamed Atyab - 2nd year
    2) Aseem Prashar - 4th year
    3) Rahul Philip - 3rd year
    4) Arush Gupta - 1st year
    BPDC also won the best spirited college award.
    Niyati Parameswaran (4th year) won the overall tournament best speaker award.
    Best speaker award for round 1, round 2 and semi finals was won by Omar Sultan (1st year), Niyati Parameswaran (4th year) and Rahul Philip (3rd year)

    First International Conference on Cloud Computing in the Middle East region ICCTAM-12 (Dec 8 – 10) at BPDC

    ICCCTAM-12 will be a premier event which will serve as a medium for networking and interaction between researchers, practitioners from industry, university and government. This event would be an ideal platform for the industries to showcase their products and services; and enable the solution seekers to get first-hand knowledge from researchers and experts. The conference will also give huge networking opportunities to cloud fraternity including solution seekers, solution providers, researchers and students.


    Prof. Dr. R.K. Mittal, Director, BITS Pilani, Dubai Campus and Program Chair, ICCCTAM-12 said, "We expect this conference to be a catalyst in promoting cloud computing usage in the region as the industry-university-government co-operation holds great promise. This is one of the first international conferences in cloud computing in the region and we are expecting a large number of delegates. At this conference we also expect students to showcase their rich talent in presenting diverse cloud computing application prototypes." 


    The conference will be an enlightening event with acclaimed keynote speakers like Dr. Eesa M.Bastaki, CEO, ICT Fund, who is a UAE National of renowned reputation and has served as the Chair of IEEE UAE section for multiple terms; Dr. Ahmed Dabbagh, who has impressive credentials and is the Technology Development Manager at Ankabut, UAE, which is developing an educational and research network in the UAE; Prof. Peter J. Varman, Professor and Researcher at Rice University, Houston, TX, USA and Scholar In Residence at VMWare. Dr. Osman Ahmed, VP and Head, Centre of Excellence for Smart Buildings at Masdar City, Siemens, Abu Dhabi, UAE.


    The thrust areas of this conference are broad in nature including cloud computing technologies, applications and management and we expect the papers, presentations and projects to be deep and useful.
