About us

The Department of Civil Engineering offers undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D programs, with emphasis on fundamental theory and practice in Civil Engineering, keeping in view the current and continuously changing scenarios in this discipline. The department runs post graduate programs in Structural and Transportation Engineering. The broad spectrum of courses is taught by a group of highly-experienced faculty who are also researchers in their own areas. The syllabus, rigorous in design and content, is in keeping with the latest developments in the industry. Well-equipped laboratories, coupled with extensive practical work, ensure the student receives a well-rounded education. 
 
In addition to teaching and instruction, the faculty is also engaged in active research with an aim to generate innovative concepts and ideas or apply the existing technologies to new applications. The department has a number of ongoing/completed/applied research projects and industrial consultancy work from various agencies. The Department disseminates the knowledge gained from its high quality research through training programs and interacts with world renowned personalities through workshops and conferences.

  • *. Mr. Syed Mazhar, a research scholar in Geotechnical Engineering specialisation, received International Travel Grant from DST for participating in ASCE GeoCongress 2022, Charlotte, North Carolina, USA (20 March, 2022 to 23 March, 2022).
 
  • *. Mr. Mallikarjun Patil V., a research scholar in Transportation Engineering specialisation, received International Travel Grant from DST for participating in Transportation Research Board 101st Annual Meeting (TRB-2022), USA (09 January, 2022 to 13 January, 2022).

• Dr. Prasanta Kumar Sahu is appointed as Member of the Standing Committee of AT 015: Freight Transportation Planning and Logistics - Transportation Research Board, USA.

• Dr. Prasanta Kumar Sahu is appointed as Handling Editor of Transportation Research Record.

• Prof. Anasua GuhaRay is appointed as “Cross-Appointed Assistant Professor” at Hiroshima University, Hiroshima, Japan for a period of 2 years (March 1, 2021-March 31, 2023).

• Dr. Prasanta Kumar Sahu is appointed as “Adjunct Professor” at University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada for a period of 3 years (December 1, 2020- November 30, 2023)

• Prof K. Srinivasa Raju published a book on Fluid Mechanics: Problem solving using Matlab published by Prentice Hall of India (https://www.phindia.com/Books/BookDetail/9789389347623/fluid-mechanics-kumar-raju)

• Prof. K. Srinivas Raju was appointed as editor, Journal of water and climate change, IWA with effect from July 1, 2020 for a period of three years (https://iwaponline.com/jwcc/pages/Editorial_Board).

• Prof. Arkamitra Kar was selected as a member of the RILEM TC MPA. This committee is intended to develop working standards for determining the mechanical behavior of alkali activated concrete.

• Prof. Anasua GuhaRay was elected as an Executive Member of Indian Geotechnical Society, Hyderabad Chapter (2019-2021).

• Dr. Mohan S.C. was awarded a sponsored project of worth Rs. 47.88 lakhs titled "Low-cost fibre reinforced elastomeric isolation using locally available materials – design methodology, numerical and experimental investigation" funded by Department of Science and Technology under DST SERB CRG (2021-2024).

• Dr. Shivang Shekhar was awarded a sponsored project of worth Rs. 14.9 lakhs titled "Seismic Resilience Enhancement of Ageing Highway Bridges using Optimal Retrofit Measures" funded by Department of Science and Technology under DST SERB SRG (2021-2023).

• Dr. Raghu Piska was awarded a DST Inspire fellowship of worth Rs. 35.0 lakhs on a project titled " Computational modeling of damage in solids " funded by Department of Science and Technology (2021-2026).

• Prof. Sridhar Raju was awarded a sponsored project of worth Rs. 6.50 lakhs titled “Feasibility study to assess the use of waste plastic aggregate in the design and performance of BC-I and BC-II mixtures for sustainable pavements " funded by K.K Waste Management Private Limited, Bengaluru, India (2021-2022).

• Prof. Anasua GuhaRay along with Prof. Aboel Naga Hossam (La Trobe University, Australia) and Prof. G.V. Ramana (IIT Delhi) was awarded a sponsored project titled "Feasibility Studies for reusing Construction and Demolition Waste for Smart Cities" supported by Asian Smart Cities Research and Innovation Network (ASCRIN) (2021-2025).

• Dr. Prasanta Kumar Sahu and Dr. Bandhan Bandhu Majumdar, along with Dr. Rodrigo Rico Bini and Dr. Jayden Hunter (La Trobe University, Australia) was awarded a sponsored project titled Electric-assist bicycle (e-Bike) mobility planning for smart cities: Fostering active transportation to improve public health, air-quality, sustainability, and efficiency during COVID-19” supported by Asian Smart Cities Research and Innovation Network (ASCRIN) (2021-2025).

• Prof. Anasua GuhaRay was awarded a sponsored project titled "Performance Evaluation of Construction and Demolition Waste as Stone Column Material for improving Bearing Capacity of Soft Soil" funded by Department of Science and Technology under DST SERB Power Grant (2021-2024).

• Prof. Sridhar Raju and Prof. Chandu Parimi were awarded a sponsored project of worth Rs. 26.5 lakhs titled “Mitigation strategy to counter top-down cracking due to non-uniform contact stresses in Flexible Pavements” funded by National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), New Delhi (2020-2023).

• Dr. Bandhan Bandhu Majumdar and Dr. Prasanta Kumar Sahu were awarded a sponsored project of worth Rs. 1.0 lakh titled “Development of Pedestrian Facility Assessment Tool for Improving Pedestrian Safety Condition in Hyderabad" funded by Awareness in Action, Hyderabad (2019-2021).

• Dr. Prasanta Kumar Sahu, Dr. Bandhan Bandhu Majumdar and Prof. Ashoke Kumar Sarkar (Pilani Campus) were awarded a sponsored project of worth Rs. 25.50 lakhs titled “Transport policy interventions to curb particulate matter emissions in Chandigarh" funded by Global Challenge Research Fund - United Kingdom (2020-2021).

• Dr. Bandhan Bandhu Majumdar was awarded a sponsored project of worth Rs. 11.40 lakhs titled "Development of a comprehensive methodology to improve road traffic safety in Indian urban roadways based on advanced statistical techniques" funded by Department of Science and Technology under DST SERB Early Career Research Grant (2020-2022).

• Prof. Jagdeesh Anamala, Prof. Murari Varma and Dr. Rajitha K were awarded a sponsored project of worth Rs. 41.98 lakhs titled “Experimental and Computational studies of Surface Water Quality Parameters from Morphometry and Spectral Characteristics" funded by CSIR (2019-2022).

• Prof. K S Raju and Prof D. Nagesh Kumar (IISc Bangalore) were awarded a sponsored project of worth Rs. 20 lakhs titled “Rainfall-Runoff Modelling for Lower Godavari Basin in a Changing Climate" funded by CSIR (2019-2022).

• Prof. Sridhar Raju and Dr. Prasanta Kumar Sahu were awarded a sponsored project of worth Rs. 9.90 lakhs titled “Examination of binder loss in bituminous mixture for In-Service pavements" funded by Government of Telangana State Roads and Building Department (2019-2021).

• Dr. Srinivas Appari (Chemical Engg., BITS)-India & Prof. Shinji Kudo (KYUSHU UNIVERSITY)-International, Dr. Bahurudeen A & Dr. Prasanta Kumar Sahu (Civil Engg., BITS)-India, Dr. Koji Nakabayashi (KYUSHU UNIVERSITY)-International were awarded a sponsored project of worth Rs. 28.80 lakhs titled "Prevention of Hazardous Field - Firing of Bagasses & Its Sustainable Utilization as a Raw Material in an Innovative Industrial Process" funded by SPARC - MHRD, Govt. of India (2019-2021).

• Dr. Prasanta Kumar Sahu, Dr. Bandhan Bandhu Majumdar and Prof. Ashoke Kumar Sarkar (Pilani Campus) were awarded a sponsored project of worth Rs. 29.40 lakhs titled "Congestion Pricing: Planning for optimal strategies & commuters behavioral implications under different pricing schemes" funded by SPARC - MHRD, Govt. of India (2019-2021).

• Prof. Arkamitra Kar, Prof. Chandu Parimi, Prof. Sridhar Raju and Prof. Jayati Ray Dutta (Dept. of Biology) were awarded a sponsored project of worth Rs. 15.57 lakhs titled " Evaluation of the Efficiency of Bacterial Inclusion in concrete" funded by Aliens Developers Pvt. Ltd. (2018-2021).

• Prof. Arkamitra Kar and Prof. Jayati Ray Dutta (Dept. of Biology) and Dr. M. Bandopadhyay (Univ. of Pittsburgh) were awarded a sponsored project of worth Rs. 17 lakhs titled "Economic Construction Practice Using Bacterial Inclusions in Concrete to Improve its Durability" funded by CSIR (2018-2021).

• Prof. Anasua GuhaRay and Prof. Arkamitra Kar (from India) and Prof. Wei Wu and Dr. Madhusudan Acharya (from BOKU, Vienna, Austria) were awarded a sponsored project of worth Rs. 6.5 lakhs titled "Implementation of plants and treated natural fibers to enhance the strength properties of soft soil and to decrease the rate of surface erosion (Nat-Treat)" funded by Indo-Austria bilateral exchange program, DST (2019-2021).
