Research Topics

The following research topics (mentioned below) are available for prospective PhD students seeking admission under my supervision.

Exciting opportunities for the UG and PG students interested in undergoing Study Oriented Project / Lab Oriented Project / Design Oriented Project / Special Project under my supervision. You will get practical hands-on experience in hardware experimentation in test rigs, introduction to graphical based simulation software and computer programming using conventional simple and high-level languages and using AI/ML.

Research topics (but not limited to):

  1. Embedded programming and hardware implementation of EV algorithms (part of topic-2)
    1. Generating PWM techniques using DSP or micro-controller
    2. PWM level shifting (3.3V to 15V) using digital ICs
    3. Design of Analog to Digital Conversion (ADC) circuits for EV control signals
    4. Design of Digital to Analog Conversion (DAC) circuits for EV control signals
    5. Current and voltage sensor design
    6. DSP and FPGA integration for multiple PWM generation for EV inverters
  2. Implementation of advanced EV Motor control algorithms (in topologies like 2L-VSC, Multi-level: CHB, NPC and MMC ) for various fault conditions in
    1. BLDC motor
    2. PMSM motor
    3. OEW-Induction Motor for single or dual drive EV cars (like in some of the variants of Tesla Model S, X, Y)
  3. Digital Twining of EV system using ML
    1. EV battery parameter prediction
    2. Power switch parameter prediction
    3. Motor winding failure prediction
    4. Overall integration for EV health monitoring
  4. Vehicle to Grid (V2G) technology – Grid connected power converter algorithm
  5. EV battery charging algorithms
  6. Base gate driver circuit designing, PCB designing for control and power circuits (part of topic-2)
  7. Any exciting research topics (e.g., AI/ML application in Electrical Engineering or other disciplines, exploring theoretical concepts)

Above topics involve

  • Simulation using MATLAB and Simulink (using graphics and block diagrams to simulate an algorithm)
  • Programming using simple language (C) or high-level languages (python, R)
  • Simple analytical calculations (basic math)
  • Analog and digital electronics
  • Power electronics & machine control using DSP or embedded processors
  • Basic & advanced control system
  • Technologies in EV (Battery Management, Charging and Drive techs)

Students for SOP/LOP/DOP/ SP will be aptly guided in case they are not introduced to any of the above topics (interest and curiosity are the key elements).

Students can ask in detail about the areas of interest and opt for their choice of interest (according to their inclination in either programming/circuit design/motor control/simulation/hardware implementation or a combination of many of the above). At the end of the project, you could be an intermediate expert in the field you select. Continuous exposure in the research area and smart work could fetch your name in a reputed journal.

Interested minds can email me (martinj@goa.bits-pilani.ac.in) about your intention. We will discuss and find a common time to continue with our journey together in this exciting field of EV, electrical engineering and AI/ML.
