About the Faculty

Prof. Manjuri Kumar is presently an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at BITS-Pilani K.K. Birla Goa Campus. She did her B.Tech and M.Tech from Calcutta University, West Bengal. She joined BITS-Pilani, Pilani Campus in 1998 as a Lecturer and persued her Ph.D in Pilani Campus and then joined BITS-Pilani K.K. Birla Goa Campus in 2004. Her research area was synthesis, characterization of novel Chromium compounds using different chelating ligands and kinetic studies of Cr(IV) and Cr(V) compounds (rare oxidation states).

Her current research area is design and synthesis of Copper and Zinc complexes to study their biological and catalytic activity.

Biological studies: Developing new Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes with hard-soft donor ligands in order to study their DNA binding propensity, DNA cleavage ability, interaction with proteins and anticancer activity, thereby determining the mode and cause of cell death through various staining techniques and cell cycle analysis.

Catalytic studies: Design and synthesis of Cu(II) complexes that exhibit catalytic activity analogous to the activity of metaloenzymes, so that they serve as enzyme mimics and are useful in understanding the mechanistic aspect of enzyme action.
