About Me

Prof. Abhishek Sharma is presently a professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at BITS Pilani K. K. Birla Goa Campus. Prof. Sharma obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering from Malaviya National Institute of Technology in 2007 and completed his Doctoral Degree in Chemical Engineering from Curtin University in 2014.

Between 2007 and 2010, he worked with Engineers India Limited as a Management Trainee and subsequently as a Process Engineer in the Process Design and Development division. During this period, he gained hands-on experience in process engineering, industrial design methodologies, and large-scale project execution, establishing a strong foundation in applied chemical engineering practice.

Following the completion of his PhD in 2014, Prof. Sharma continued at Curtin University as Research Associate (2014–2015) and later served as Visiting Adjunct Research Fellow (2015–2018). In August 2015, he joined Manipal University Jaipur as an Associate Professor, was promoted to Professor in 2020, and also served as a Research Fellow at RMIT University, Australia (2022–2023). In January 2025, he joined BITS Pilani, K. K. Birla Goa Campus, as a Professor.

As an academic professional, Prof.Sharma has been actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate instruction in core chemical engineering subjects. His primary academic interests lie in Thermochemical Conversion Processes, Reaction Engineering, Waste-to-Energy Systems, Biochar Technology, and Process Modelling. His research focuses on biomass and plastic pyrolysis, co-pyrolysis, bio-oil upgrading, reactor design and scale-up, TEA/LCA , machine learning-assisted prediction of biochar yield, and sustainable materials for energy and environmental applications. His work emphasizes process intensification, circular economy frameworks, and translational research that bridges laboratory-scale studies with industrial implementation.

Prof. Sharma has successfully led and executed several sponsored research projects funded by the Department of Science and Technology (India) and industry partners, primarily in the domains of waste valorization, lignocellulosic biomass conversion, hydrogen innovation clusters, and decentralized solid waste processing. He has published over 50 SCI-indexed research papers in leading international journals and holds a granted patent along with multiple published patents related to biomass conversion and sustainable materials development.

Prof. Sharma has guided multiple PhD scholars in areas including biomass pyrolysis kinetics, municipal solid waste conversion, bio-oil separation processes, co-pyrolysis optimization, and biochar applications in water treatment.

Prof. Sharma’s overall professional orientation integrates reaction engineering, thermochemical reactor design, advanced analytical characterization, and data-driven modeling to develop scalable, energy-efficient, and environmentally sustainable process technologies.
