About us

The Economics and Finance Department at BITS Pilani - Hyderabad Campus offers MSc (Hons) Economics as a first degree. Minor in Finance  and PhD programme. The diversity of specializations of the departmental faculty has promoted multi-faceted research at the Department and has brought a certain depth to the courses as well. Along with research, the Department recognizes the growing demand for trained manpower in education, industry, government and other sectors as well as nurturing future researchers and specialists in economics and management. The teaching methodology pursues to provide students with a strong conceptual foundation and to create a continuous interest and involvement with the real life applications of Economics, Finance and Management.

Activities

The department helps students from all other streams of engineering and science in grooming their skills and knowledge by conducting hands on workshops, debate and panel discussions from time to time on economics, finance and management.
 
Workshops :
 
Apart from the academic curriculum the department has consistently organised workshops on Research Methodology (ANOVA, Factor Analysis, Regression, and Discriminant Analysis), international trade, banking, marketing, finance and stock market trading.
  
Panel Discussion :
 
To capture and assess the economic or financial impact of recent policies and development, the department regularly organises panel discussion with eminent panellists from industry as well as academia. Some of the panellists for intellectual discussions includes Prof. Krishnamurthy Subramanian (ISB, Hyderabad), Prof. Thirmulai Ramabhadran (ISB, Hyderabad), Prof. K Nageshwar, (Osmania University), Prof. Indrakanth (RBI Chair Professor, CSD, Hyderabad). Various issues like “Impact of Union Budget”, “The Great Indian Development - Growth vs. Development”, “Britain Exit – BREXIT” have been discussed.

Economics Association

The Economic Association is one of the 11 technical associations on campus. Its members are all the students pursuing M.Sc (Hons.) Economics. The Ecossoc (as it is called usually) is responsible for organizing activities of the department of Economics and Finance. These include Freshers', Farewell etc. It also organizes talks, workshops, and debates to complement the learning of economics and finance related topics among the students of the campus (irrespective of the branch). The Ecossoc also publishes a fortnightly newsletter called 'DE-ECONOMICS'. The newsletter includes reports and editorials on current issues relating to economics and finance, book reviews among other things. The Ecossoc was named the best Association of the academic year 2014-15.

1. Mrs. Sai Priya Kamath, Assistant Professor at London School of Economics delivered a guest lecture on “Once Bitten Once Shy: Learning or Conservatism after Audit Failure?”.
 
2. Prof. Tarun Jain, Assistant Professor of Economics and Public Policy, Indian School of Business delivered a guest lecture on “Letting the briber go free?”.
 
3. Prof. Bhagwan Chaudhary, Professor in Finance at UCLA Anderson delivered a guest lecture on “Financial Inclusion”.
 
4. Prof. Ramana Sonti delivered the lecture on “Shannon meets Nash” at IIIT Hyderabad.
 
5. Dr. Archana Srivastava delivered the lecture on “Impact of Trade on Wage Inequality, Poverty, Employment and Growth” in a workshop on “Frontier areas in Econometrics & International Trade and Finance”, at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur.
 
6. Dr. Durgesh Pathak delivered the lecture on “Growth, Redistribution and Poverty changes in India: A sharply decomposition analysis.” in the “International Seminar on Poverty & Deprivation in South Asia” at BHU, Varanasi.
