Dr. Madhushree Chakrabarty is an assistant professor at the BITS Pilani-Hyderabad campus. In broad strokes, her research examines the behavioural and neural mechanisms underlying the pragmatic use of language. Her scientific endeavour stretches from investigating language cognition in real-world everyday contexts to a deep search to unravel its intricate intertwining with other cognitive mechanisms and from general principles to individual differences. Her ultimate aim is to provide a deep account of the intricacies associated with human language use from a basic scientific standpoint and to apply this knowledge to the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic tools. Her approach to science is infused with a deep commitment to open science and transparency. She has published original research works on linguistic and cognitive dysfunctions in international journals of repute. She has adapted and developed several cognitive tests in Indian languages to facilitate diagnoses of cognitive and neuropsychological disorders. She uses behavioural and neuroimaging methods for her investigations.

Before joining BITS, she worked as a scientist at the Bangur Institute of Neuroscience, Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Kolkata. In 2016, she received a Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellowship and was affiliated with the Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Pennsylvania. At UPenn, she worked under Prof. Anjan Chatterjee. Dr. Chakrabarty was a DST-CSRI postdoctoral fellow at the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, from 2015 to 2016 and the Bangur Institute of Neuroscience, Kolkata, from 2012 to 2014. She was a lecturer at the Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities (DIVYANGJAN), Eastern Regional Centre, Kolkata, from 2004–2009. She received her PhD from the Centre for Cognitive Science at Jadavpur University with a fellowship from the Indian Statistical Institute.
