Overview and Objective

Innovation is an integral part of BITS. 

The Institute has set up the Center for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE) to support innovation and entrepreneurship. The objective of CIIE is to provide an enabling ecosystem for 1) creation, 2) protection, 3) awareness and 4) commercialization of Intellectual Property (IP).  

CIIE plays a key role in supporting the innovation related activities by the Faculty, PhD Scholars and Students.

Major initiatives of CIIE

1. Intellectual Property (IP) protection

Intellectual Property (IP) protection is a crucial component of innovation.

CIIE provides administrative support and coordination during Filing of Patents by the inventors - the Faculty, PhD Scholars and Students.

2. IP Awareness

CIIE regularly conducts seminars / webinars on the various aspects of IP creation, protection and commercialization. 
 
3. Support innovation and entrepreneurial activities

Entrepreneurship Education: NVC

New Venture Creation (NVC) is a unique course being offered at BITS, Pilani University that enables students to graduate as job givers than job takers. The purpose of this course is not to teach entrepreneurship but to create entrepreneurs. The course enables the student start ups, mostly technology based, to grow by providing the building blocks for creating an enterprise using the lean start up method. This course provided students with the tools to take their ideas to the market.

The course collaborates with large number of BITSian entrepreneurs as well as several non-BITSian entrepreneurs and investors for lecture and mentorship. It is their selfless support that forms the key to the success of this course. 

In order to create a successful startup, student teams are required to address various issues in startup creation: market research, competitor analysis, customer development, technology viability, product development, marketing & sales strategy, team formation, legal compliance and fund raising. Interactive sessions with entrepreneurs across the globe are supplemented with faculty facilitated hands-on workshop and feedback sessions to create deliverables like elevator pitch, business model canvas and minimum viable product. Offered through the special Tele-presence Classroom facility connecting all BITS, Pilani Campuses the sessions are able to connect virtually with speakers across the globe. 

Each team is assigned an experienced entrepreneur as mentor who guides them through the semester and beyond. The teams compete with each other and the top teams are awarded seed fund to pursue the business idea for incubation after the completion of the course and eventually to launch the business.

Entrepreneur in Residence

Birla Institute of Technology launched the Entrepreneur in Residence program (EIR) to provide its students and interested faculty with a unique opportunity to meet one-on-one with successful entrepreneurs. The mentoring program is aimed to support an entrepreneurial ecosystem that is being laid down by the University through teaching and applied research, setting up of incubators on each campus, providing seed fund opportunities and IPR support mechanisms to encourage innovation.

 “Entrepreneur in Residence Programme is a wonderful opportunity for students to engage with successful entrepreneurs. The university understands the need of creating an entrepreneurial ecosystem for its students and it is with this understanding that we have launched this initiative to provide practical learning opportunities that facilitates interaction with experienced entrepreneurs, industry experts and venture capitalists to gain insight and inspiration.” ( Prof. Mridula Goel, Faculty in Charge- CIIE)

The programme was launched by BITS Pilani alumnus, Phanindra Sama, Co-Founder, redbus.in. He was the first entrepreneur of this programme and was on campus for a whole week. Phanindra started redbus.in in August 2006, as the largest online bus ticketing company in India. During the week long program Phanindra Sama held discussions with students and faculty and addressed concerns regarding startups and pursuing entrepreneurship as a career.

The objective of the Entrepreneur in Residence Programme is to provide students the chance to learn best practices for starting a business and also, give them an insight into specific industries or markets. The  program is meant to be of special benefit for students interested in innovation and start- ups. Open to all students across the BITS Pilani campuses through the telepresence facility.

Business Model Canvas was organised by Student Entrepreneurship Cell, CEL in CTE Tech Weekend. The Event saw the participation of 26 Participants and 6 Teams. An informative session on making a Business Model Canvas was held at the beginning which was followed by Brainstorming Session. At the end, 6 Teams presented their Canvas and 2 Teams were adjudged the Winners.

IPR Filing Process

PROCEDURE FOR FILING PATENT (INDIAN PATENT): FOR FACULTY

CIIE in collaboration with the Aditya Birla Group’s Corporate Legal Cell (CLC) will help Faculty across BITS Pilani and its 4 campuses in filing of patent applications.

In addition to the support CLC provides BITS Pilani on its legal matters, its IP Team will actively support BITS Pilani in a variety of IP related activities. It is envisaged that CIIE will be the single point of contact for CLC’s IP Team.

All costs incurred in any of the patenting activities shall be borne by BITS Pilani after approvals at concerned levels and this will be facilitated by CIIE. 

CIIE hereby clarifies that only those patenting requests will be considered by the CLC for final filing that is not part of public domain knowledge. It is further clarified that the following activities apart from others, by the Faculty shall be considered as disclosure in public domain - publication in journals or literature, disclosure in exhibitions, sharing with third parties, information on webpage, any other form of public disclosure, etc. It is clarified that any request of publication of any technical literature by concerned faculty after initiating the filing of IPR will need prior approval by the campus faculty in-Charge in writing through DRC / HOD or respective Departments 

Detailed Process for filing Patent

Step 1. Faculty shall obtain the Invention Disclosure Form (IDF) from their respective campus Faculty in-Charges (CIIE) or BITS Pilani website and submit 2 hard copies and a softcopy of duly completed IDF through their Department DRC ensuring it is signed by the respective Head of the Department (HOD).

DRC and HOD if necessary can seek clarifications as appropriate before forwarding the application to CIIE. A detailed review of the application need not be done unless deemed necessary. It is mandatory however that the DRC convener or Department Head at this stage inform CIIE on whether University resources have been used by concerned faculty in the proposed invention.

Duration: 3 working days
Responsibility: DRC Convener

Step 2. The concerned campus Faculty in-Charge (CIIE) will forward the submitted IDF to CLC for its “patentability” analysis. With regard to clarifications sought by CLC, the faculty in-Charge shall facilitate connecting the inventor/s to CLC through an appropriate channel. CLC will prepare and submit a detailed report on its patentability analysis to the Faculty in-Charge who would then forward the same to the concerned Faculty for their consideration.

Duration: 10 working days (including forwarding of application to CLC and analysis)
Responsibility: CIIE (through campus Faculty in-Charge) / CLC

Step 3. If the result of the “patentability” analysis is positive, the Faculty in-Charge (CIIE) of the respective campus through Prof.in-Charge (CIIE) will seek approval from the Director of respective campus for filing the final application of Indian patent.

Duration: 3 working days
Responsibility: CIIE (through campus Faculty in-Charge) / Prof. in-Charge, (CIIE) Campus Directors to support with approval

If the patentability analysis is negative, the concerned inventor/s cannot go ahead with filing of the patent application on their own in the event that University resources have been utilized in the proposed invention (refer point 4 in the Note section for further details).

Step 4. The concerned campus Faculty in-Charge (CIIE) will convey the Director’s approval to CLC and help CLC connect with the concerned Inventor/s on any patent drawing related requirements or invention related clarifications. Upon receiving the drawings, CLC shall draft the patent application and share it with the concerned inventor/s through the Faculty in-charge (CIIE). Once, the patent application is approved by the inventor/s, CLC shall complete the necessary statutory documentation and file the application at the Patent Office. Post filing, CLC shall share the filed documents and official filing receipt with the CIIE Faculty in-Charge for their records.

Duration: 15 working days (after receiving Patent Drawings/ technical clarifications, if any)
Responsibility: Campus Faculty in-Charge / CLC

Step 5. Post filing of the patent application, CIIE will get an IP assignment agreement executed between the concerned Faculty and BITS Pilani and keep the originals for its record. A copy of the Deed shall also be forwarded to CLC for its record.

Responsibility: CLC

PROCEDURE FOR FILING INDIAN PATENT: FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF (NON – TEACHING)

It is mandatory for students and Department staff to seek a mentor in their Department and put forth an expression of interest to file a patent in writing to Department DRC / HOD through the mentor.

The DRC convener along with concerned HOD and mentor should, if required, seek clarifications / review the request in detail and then forward it to CIIE for search and filing by CLC. It is also mandatory that the DRC convener or Department Head at this stage inform CIIE on whether University resources have been used by concerned faculty in the proposed invention. 

The search and subsequent filing will follow the same procedure outlined for faculty.

If the patent search is positive, concerned inventor/s will have to put in a request in writing for financial support with regard to filing the final application through CIIE Faculty in-Charge and seek respective Campus Director’s approval for the same.

If the patentability analysis is negative, the concerned student/s or staff cannot go ahead with filing of the patent application on their own in the event that University resources have been utilized in the proposed invention (refer point 4 in the Note section for further details). For staff associated with Divisions, the request letter and IDF may be forwarded to CIIE through the respective Controlling Officer. 

PROCEDURE FOR FILING PATENTS IN OTHER COUNTRIES: FOR FACULTY, STUDENTS AND STAFF

Faculty members, students and staff of BITS Pilani having interests in filing their patent applications in foreign countries are advised to follow the same process as that for Indian Patent filing (through CIIE).

CLC will support in foreign country filings including PCT filings (only for multiple countries). However concerned Inventor/s will have to put in a request in writing for financial support with regard to filing the final application through CIIE Faculty in-Charge and seek respective Campus Director’s approval for the same. This request may be forwarded for approval only if the patent search by CLC is positive.
If this request is not approved, the expenses towards filing of the final application will have to borne by the concerned inventor/s. CLC will however support the filing process.

If the patentability analysis is negative, the concerned faculty, student/s or staff cannot go ahead with filing of the patent application on their own in the event that University resources have been utilized in the proposed invention (refer point 4 in the Note section for further details).
