About us

The Department of Mechanical Engineering started right at the inception of the BITS-Pilani, Hyderabad campus and has been offering B. E. (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering. The department currently has a student strength of 260 and faculty strength of 14. The faculty members include 9 PhD holders and remaining ME/M.Tech. holders. The ME/M.Tech. holders are all lecturers and they are pursuing PhD under the faculty development programme of the University. Higher Degrees programmes, namely, M. E. (Design Engineering) and M. E. (Thermal Engineering) were recently started for which admissions are conducted at the beginning of every academic year. The department has superior quality laboratory facilities and all faculty members are highly qualified. All of them have education as well as teaching, industrial and research experience at reputed national and international Universities or organizations prior to joining BITS.

Activities

The Mechanical Engineering Department is involved in teaching, research and consultancy, as well as guiding project/thesis/dissertation students at all First Degree, Higher Degree and Doctoral levels. There are currently six PhD students in the department of whom four are working as lecturers and two are full time research scholars. Mechanical Engineering Department also has an "ME Association" that is responsible for conducting the co-curricular activities for Mechanical Engineering students and for publishing the department's magazine, "Spark Plug". Several invited talks by eminent academicians, scientists and experts were conducted so far under the aegis of ME Association. Recently, the local chapter of Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)-INDIA has been started and several project activities are going on under the aegis of this chapter.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON WIND ENERGY: MATERIALS, ENGINEERING AND POLICIES

NOV 22-23, 2012, BITS PILANI, HYDERABAD CAMPUS

Renewable energy sources have become a necessity rather than a choice and there is a huge potential for wind energy but there is a lot to be perfected in all aspects. Particularly most regions of many countries including India are classified as low wind energy regimes necessitating identification of appropriate models for estimation and realization of potentials, site selection, new materials such as composites, new techniques of manufacturing, and policy making. This conference is aimed at providing a platform for discussion and dissemination of knowledge through the participation of all stake holders also leading to certain recommendations on future course of action.

For more details see the Conference website: www.wemep2012.com
