Established in August 2008, the Department of Chemical Engineering at BITS Pilani Hyderabad Campus has grown into a leading center of excellence in chemical engineering education and research. The department offers B.E., M.E., Ph.D. programs, along with minors in Materials Science and Engineering and Work-Integrated Learning Programs for professionals, currently serving around 200 UG and PG students. Key strengths include expert faculty, state-of-the-art labs, and vibrant research in areas like catalysis, materials science, colloids, polymers, electrochemical engineering, and modeling, yielding 70+ annual publications, patents, and ₹12 crore in funded projects from DST, DBT, and others. The hallmark Practice School program immerses students in industry for real-world problem-solving, while successful alumni lead in industry, research, and entrepreneurship.
The Department of Chemical Engineering at BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus is a young and vibrant department that has rapidly grown into a nationally recognized hub for chemical engineering education and research since its establishment in 2008. With a strong emphasis on both fundamentals and contemporary industrial practice, the department strives to nurture technically sound, socially responsible, and innovation-driven chemical engineers for diverse career paths in industry, research, and entrepreneurship.
The Department offers robust programs in three tiers of Chemical Engineering i.e Bachelors (B.E Honors), Masters (M.E) and Ph.D. We also train our students in doing research in thrust areas as part of the curriculum. The curriculum is continuously updated through close interaction with industry and active feedback from our Practice School partners and alumni.
The department has developed modern laboratories and research facilities that support work in areas such as catalysis and reaction engineering, materials and surface science, colloids, polymers and biomaterials, electrochemical engineering, energy and fuels, and process modeling and simulation. This ecosystem has enabled a steady growth in high-quality publications, patents, and sponsored projects from major national funding agencies and industry collaborators.
Looking into the rapid change in the global industry environment, Department of Chemical Engineering at BITS Pilani, Hyderabad campus is determined to nurture new talents and create leaders and entrepreneurs who can bring high-level value addition to the Chemical and allied industries. Our mission is to drive excellence in Chemical Engineering education and training thereby leading to the creation of a common platform for connecting academia and industry in the exchange of knowledge.
Head of Department

To excel in teaching/learning, innovative research and industry engagement and to disseminate the same in order to become a world leader in chemical engineering and allied interdisciplinary areas.
Our Mission includes imparting quality education and training in chemical engineering and associated fields to enable the students to imbibe technical and analytical skills through the culture of logical and critical thinking. We aim at inculcating a sense of social and environmental responsibility among students. BITS Pilani vouches to establish modern infrastructure and conducive research environment for carrying out academic and sponsored research. Additionally, we want to foster a spirit of excellence and professional leadership in students and faculty members through exposure to leading academic institutions, research organisations and external experts and give them suitable opportunities for sustained interaction as well as collaboration with academia and industry.
The Department of Chemical Engineering is working on diverse research areas such as: Process Development, Reaction Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Electrochemical Engineering, Polymers and Composites, Catalysis, Mathematical Modelling and Simulation, Biomaterials, Pulp and Paper Technology, Fuel Cells, Environmental Pollution Control, Material Science and Nanotechnology. The research outcomes are regularly published in high impact journals and conferences.
