Suchismita Satpathy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus. She specializes in Urban Sociology, with a strong academic and research focus on the dynamics of the political economy of urban space. She completed her PhD in Sociology in 2016 from the University of Hyderabad, one of India’s leading centers for critical social research. With deep methodological expertise in qualitative research particularly ethnography as well as mixed-method approaches, her work bridges rich empirical fieldwork with analytical rigor.

Her research interests span urban space, urban governance, urban planning and policies, smart cities, the right to the city and citizenship, urban water management, gender issues in India, street vendors in Indian cities, urban segregation, urban architectural space, urban land use, and climatic resilience in coastal cities. Her work also engages with issues related to water and land resources and the socio-political processes shaping contemporary cities, with particular attention to questions of access, inequality, and governance.

With over 10 years of teaching experience, she has taught a wide range of sociology courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, mentoring students in both theoretical foundations and applied research skills. She is actively engaged in research projects on urban governance, supervises PhD students, and contributes to scholarly debates and policy-relevant discussions on sustainable and inclusive urban development.
