Centre for Desert Development Technologies

The need for a green sustainable world has never been as sharply felt as it is today. The conservation and judicious use of natural resources for economic upliftment, employment generation and alleviating social inequalities is the raison d’ etre of the Centre. We carry our research in the following areas:

  • The efficient use of water, land reclamation and rehabilitation.

  • Developing affordable technologies to efficiently deliver and monitor water for irrigation use by employing sensor network and microcontrollers.

  • Developing Science and Technology for soil conservation and fertility improvement.

  • Using biotechnology: tissue culture, genetic engineering and biofertilization for increased food production, livestock and bio-diversity.

  • Develop technologies to harness non-conventional energy sources like solar energy for agriculture and human habitat.

  • Educating, training, demonstrating, evaluating, and documenting technologies for sustainable desert development.

Centre for Robotics and Intelligent Systems

At The Centre for Robotics & Intelligent Systems (CRIS), we develop prototypes of robots that provide greater intelligence and higher versatility for robotic tasks under ever-changing constraints of the environment. We have acquired in-depth technical skills in design and fabrication of robot manipulators, AGVs, devising intelligent control strategies for both manipulator and navigation and their real time implementations. Our long term objective is to make Indian industry competitive in this field by developing indigenous technical skills, manpower and innovative spirit.

Technology Business Incubator

What differentiates us, BITS Pilani from other universities is our belief that technical knowledge needs to be complemented with other skills and abilities in our students for successful entrepreneurship. With a view to promoting both, the University, along with the Government of India has established a Technology Business Incubator (TBI) in the area of Embedded Systems and VLSI Design and a Centre for Entrepreneurial Leadership (CEL) to give a specific boost and emphasis to entrepreneurship development. The two units promote entrepreneurial leadership across all disciplines, facilitate entrepreneurial activity amongst students, and invite entrepreneurs to use TBI services to develop end products for commercialization

Centre for Software Development

Effective resource utilisation across different locations when the numbers involved are large is always a challenge. We have several thousand students and faculty spread across our 4 campuses. When the students in our off-campus work integrated learning programme are included, the challenge grows manifold. The Centre for Software Development (CSD) and the Centre for Educational Technology came together to form the Software Development & Educational Technology Unit (SDET) with a mandate to identify, evolve and deploy appropriate technology to address this issue.
