Molecular and cellular neurobiology has been my long-term interest and my primary expertise is cellular neuroscience and physiology. As a cell biologist, I also developed a deep understanding of neuronal functions at various scales using genetics, microscopy, and spectroscopy as the specific tools of my experimental investigations. I am also familiar with the broader aspects of brain development and behavior through close association with some of the finest researchers in these areas during my career in the TIFR system, and more recently, at NBRC. After obtaining a Ph.D. for research on the development of chemosensory organs at TIFR, Mumbai (1995), I worked at IMCB, Singapore, and at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, University of California, San Diego, on identifying the neuronal functions of motor proteins. I established my laboratory at TIFR in 1998 to investigate the molecular cell biology of motor proteins and study their impact on neuronal functions and organismal behavior. At present, our primary focus is to understand how cell signaling regulates intracellular transport in the axon and sensory cilia and impacts neuronal homeostasis. Molecular genetics, biophysical analysis and microscopic techniques (both optical and electron microscopies) are the primary expertise in my laboratory.
