In late 2011, Hari Nair's doctoral thesis Contra imperio: El discurso de derecho natural y la autonomía de los indios americanos (Against Empire: The discourse of Natural Law and the autonomy of the American Indians) was awarded themención honorífica (special mention) in the annual competition for the Edmundo O'Gorman prize in the category for the best doctoral dissertation within the field of Historiography and Theory of History by the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia under the auspices of the Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes, Mexico.
