Research Interests

The broad area of research includes synaptic homeostasis maintenance by Vitamin D3 in health and diseased conditions. Synaptic impairment underlies a common detrimental effect observed under most neurotoxic conditions, where our research group has shown an antioxidant and neuroprotective property of nutraceutical, Vitamin D3 in a mouse model of HD. We also showed VD administration rescued the expression pattern of key neurotrophic factors in the brain like brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nerve growth factor (NGF) in the mouse striatum. We recently provided evidence that the neuroprotective benefits of Vitamin D3 (VD) occurred through a rescue in the protein expression of Vitamin D receptors (VDR).

One of the primary focuses of my laboratory is to decipher the myriad molecular mechanism through which the brain resident immune protein expression like T-cell receptor beta subunit (TCR-β) gets modulated under neuropathological/neurotoxic conditions like Huntington’s disease (HD) or under neuropsychiatric disorders like schizophrenia. People with neurological disorders have psychiatric, cognitive, and motor dysfunction where impairments begin with synaptic pathologies much before the clinical symptoms of the disorder.

Our lab is keen to unravel the different modes of molecular mechanisms undertaken by VD in restoring neuronal functions and synaptic communication in an aged brain and neuropathological condition characterized by increased mitochondrial dysfunction and enhanced oxidative stress. We aim to investigate the downstream molecular pathways responsible for crosstalk between VD and ionotropic receptors at the central nervous system synapses by undertaking in-vivo and in-vitro models. We undertake behavior assays, whole-cell electrophysiology (to monitor neuronal activity), molecular biology, proteomics, and biochemical tools to investigate the myriad outcomes of Vitamin D3 (VD) in the central nervous system.

Research

Research Interests

1. Radomes: Radome is a short form of "Radar Dome". It is a protective cover for the antenna. The radiation emitting from the antenna passes through the radome and as a result some of the characteristics of the antenna change. Radome introduces phase delays, changes side-lobe levels of the antennas and introduces bore sight errors in seeker antennas. The radome has to be designed in such a way that it protects the antenna in the given environment and its effect on the antenna radiation remains minimum. Therefore, the design of radome is challenging, especially in the cases of airborne radomes used for antennas mounted on aircraft, satellite or a missile. We have developed the 3D ray tracing based software for analysis, design and optimization of antenna-radome systems for airborne applications.
 
2. Absorbers and Rasorbers: It is very important to protect our strategic defense systems against detection by enemy radars. Absorbers are used to absorb the incoming electromagnetic waves so that the radar cross section (RCS) of the system can be reduced and the stealth property of the system can be improved. Rasorbers are absorbers with an additional transmission band. Therefore, the rasorber can be used as a radome. Both the absorbers and rasorbers are constructed using frequency selective surfaces (FSS) present on layers of dielectric material. The design is usually accomplished using a commercial EM solvers such as CST MWS or Ansys HFSS.

Amina F.

Amina is a native of Kerala. She holds a M. E. Chemical Engineering degree from Calicut University and is pursuing a PhD under Dr. Amol Deshpande at BITS Pilani K K Birla Goa campus.

PhD Thesis Topic: Application of Chemical Looping / Unmixed Combustion (CLC/UMC) for sustained heat transfer to liquids

Her research demonstrates the application of chemical looping/unmixed combustion (CLC/UMC) for generating hot liquid utility/steam as an energy-efficient, environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative to existing premixed (conventional) combustion-based hot utility generation systems.

The work includes the design and fabrication of the proposed system at lab scale, conduction of experimental study (reference: water heating), modeling and CFD simulation of the proposed system and its techno-economic analysis.

This research work has resulted in four peer-reviewed journal publications and five conference papers.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Narayan Korde

Narayan is currently working as an Associate Director at Teva Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Mumbai. He has around 18 years of industrial experience in Energy Management, Global Engineering Projects and more than 500+ Utility design and consultancies globally. He is a Chemical Engineer from J.N.E. College, Cha. Sambhaji Nagar (formerly Aurangabad), Maharashtra and completed his M.Tech in Energy from Savitribai Phule (Pune) University, followed by MBA in Operations Management from ICFAI, Hyderabad.

Currently, he is pursuing PhD as a part-time student under Dr. Amol Deshpande at BITS Pilani, K K Birla Goa Campus.

PhD Thesis Topic: Techno-economic feasibility of flue gas waste heat recovery system integrated with heat pump for process oil-fired boiler

His research demonstrates the optimum waste heat recovery potential while avoiding the sulfur dew point-induced acidic corrosion irrespective of the process load variations and minimizing the bypassing of the hot flue gas from the process boilers. The study also explores the application of the heat pump to improve the overall boiler efficiency without impacting acidic corrosion. The work includes defining the industrial problem statement, designing and installing the proposed system and plant scale, collecting the data and its analysis to verify the differentiation in the key performance parameters between the conventional and the proposed modified system including the process modeling to generalize its application for similar systems

The research has resulted in two conference papers / posters.
