Prof. (Dr.) Shamsher Bahadur Singh is the Shri S.K. Birla Chair Professor and Senior Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at BITS Pilani. He holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from IIT Kanpur, a Post-doctorate from Lawrence Technological University (LTU), USA, and is a licensed Professional Engineer [P.E. (Civil)] in the state of Michigan, USA. He is also a Chartered Engineer (India). He has been elected Fellow of several prestigious international organizations, including the American Society of Civil Engineers (F. ASCE), the Structural Engineering Institute of ASCE (F.SEI), the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (F. CDRI), the Institution of Civil Engineers, UK (FICE), the Indian Association of Structural Engineers (FIAStructE), and the Institution of Engineers (F.IE). Prof. Singh is also a recipient of several fellowships, such as Post-doctorate from the Lawrence Technological University (LTU), USA, Quality Improvement Program Fellowship at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, Junior Research Fellowship at Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT), Allahabad, and National Merit Scholarships at National Institute of Technology (NIT) Warangal.
With over 37 years of teaching, research, and administrative experience across India and the USA, Prof. Singh has taught at MNNIT Allahabad, NIT Warangal, LTU (USA), and BITS Pilani. His current research focuses on Functionally Graded Composite materials, Fiber Reinforced Polymer-reinforced prestressed concrete structures, and nonlinear finite element modeling of advanced composite materials and structures. He has successfully executed 48 funded research and consultancy projects supported by national and international agencies such as US-India Education Foundation (USIEF), New Delhi, UK-India Education Research Initiatives (UKIERI), Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), New Delhi, Department of Science and Technology (DST), Science Engineering and Research Board (SERB) & Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) of New Delhi, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi, National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) Limited, University Grant Commission (UGC), New Delhi, Aditya Birla Group (ABG), KK Birla Academy, Ministry of Earth Science and Engineering and Ministry of Textile, Government of India, and Ohio Department of Transportation, USA.
Prof. Singh has authored more than 306 publications, which include 124 journal papers, 106 conference papers, 15 books (comprising three printed textbooks, one online text, and eleven edited volumes), 34 book chapters, 14 research reports, and 11 patents (three granted and eight filed). He has supervised 9 PhD scholars, 37 master’s theses, and over 200 undergraduate students, and is currently guiding 11 doctoral candidates. His scholarly contributions have been widely recognized, and he has been consistently listed among the world’s top 2% scientists in Civil Engineering (Buildings and Construction) by Stanford University and Elsevier (2023, 2024). In recognition of his outstanding academic and professional contributions, he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award (DAA-2024) from NIT Warangal in 2024, the Outstanding ICI-UltraTech Concrete Technologist Award in 2024, and the Best Academician of the Year Award by the honorable Governor of Rajasthan, Shri Kalraj Mishra at the “Eminent Engineers Award event’ organized by Institution of Engineers (India) at Rajasthan State Center, Jaipur on Engineers Day in 2020. His research received the Best Paper Award from the Indian Concrete Journal in 2020, and at the International Conference on Advances in Civil and Environmental Engineering (ACEE 2015) held at Penang, Malaysia, he has been honored on numerous occasions for his professional excellence.
He is actively involved in several professional organizations. He is a life member of the Indian Concrete Institute (ICI), the Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE), and the American Concrete Institute (ACI, India Chapter), as well as a Member of ACI (USA). He serves on the ACI 440 committee on FRP and the ACI 423 committee for Prestressed concrete structures. He is an Associate member of the main committee on the Standards Committee for ASCE/SEI 7-Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures for the 2023–2028 cycle. He also represents India as an expert member of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and ISO TC71/SC 6/WG6 committees on FRP bars and grids, and was appointed as principal member of CED 54 Concrete Reinforcements Sectional Committee of BIS, Government of India, as representative of BITS Pilani. The Vice-Chancellor, BITS Pilani, also nominated him for developing course packages and training programs for the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), New Delhi. He has served as the Indian Team Leader for the prestigious UKIERI (UK-India Education Research Initiatives) collaborative research project involving 10 institutions (eight from India and two from the UK) on sustainable concrete Infrastructure. He is also a member of various committees and an editorial board member of 5 Journals. He also represents BITS Pilani on the Ireland-India Concrete Research Initiatives (IICRI) committee.
He contributes to multiple editorial boards and has served as a guest editor for leading journals such as The Indian Concrete Journal. Very recently, he has been appointed as Review Editor on the Editorial Board of Computational Methods in Structural Engineering (specialty section of Frontiers in Built Environment), Founder and Faculty Advisor to the SEI Graduate Student Chapter of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and Guest Editor for The Indian Concrete Journal (May 2023, July 2024 Issues). He has organized and chaired several national and international conferences, including the ACSGE series (2009, 2018, 2024) and the 1st International Conference on Rehabilitation and Retrofitting of Structures in association with Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC), Mumbai, ASTR, and VJTI in Mumbai (2019). He has also coordinated training programs, workshops, and faculty development initiatives in collaboration with DRDO, ONGC, AICTE, and international partners. He has delivered lectures at numerous national and international forums as an invited keynote speaker.
