Kudos to the team!!!
Psychedelics drugs are abused because of their addictive and hallucinogenic properties. But some of them also have positive effects, such as in promoting neuronal plasticity. It would be great if we could separate the two facets! A new pathway for drug action that we have discovered may provide a glimpse of that possibility. We probed the psychedelic drug DOI in an in vitro system, and found that it is a potent agent for changing lipid membranes, which in turn can change membrane fusion and plasticity. So it can have receptor-independent effects on neuronal signalling. Since the hallucinogenic effects are thought to be mediated by the receptors, this shows a possible route to develop new molecules that can mimic its membrane-mediated actions, but will be devoid of hallucinogenic effects. Check out our new results published recently in ACS Chemical Neuroscience: https://doi.org/10.1021/acschemneuro.4c00484
Kudos to Debsankar and the team, and thanks to all our collaborators.

Interacting droplet pair suspended in a non-isothermal shear flow, Physics of Fluids 35, 042012 (2023)
The different patterns exhibited by droplet pair interacting in a shear flow field in the presence of a transverse temperature gradient applied across a micro-channel are shown here. Some of the patterns shown here include: sliding-over motion, follow-up motion, reversing motion and droplet coalescence. These patterns are seen to be strongly dependent on various parameters such as channel width, initial separation distance between the droplet, the strength of the imposed temperature gradient as compared to the imposed viscous pressure driven flow.
Coexisting sliding states of active particles near top and bottom walls of a micro-channel, Langmuir 2020, 36, 25, 7133–7147.
Diffuso-phoretic active particles is seen to exhibit sliding states near the bottom wall of a micro-channel, but can the same particle also exhibit a sliding state near the top wall ? If the answer is yes, then under what parametric regime is this possible ?

Research Journey Unveiled: From Earth's Depths to Computational Frontiers
Embarking on my research odyssey as a Research Assistant in VECC Calcutta's Helium Recovery Division in 1990, I delved into experimental work under the mentorship of Dr. Debashis Ghosh, a student of the esteemed Prof. Shyama Das Chatterjee. My initial focus centered on comprehending the release of trapped helium and other gases resulting from the Earth's tectonic movements, aiming to predict seismic activity and geological phenomena.
Transitioning into my Ph.D. at IIT Kanpur's Nuclear Physics Laboratory, I harnessed Mossbauer spectroscopy and positron annihilation spectroscopy. Leveraging delicate nuclear techniques, I employed various radioactive sources, including a 57Co source with a strength of 50 mC. A closed-cycle helium cryostat operating at temperatures near 8K played a pivotal role in my research. Complementing these techniques, I utilized X-ray, SEM, TEM, EDAX, and more to scrutinize minerals, steels, alloys, coals, and an array of diverse samples.
The theoretical facet of my journey unfolded in IIT Kanpur's Materials and Metallurgical Department, where, as a research associate under Professor N. Chakraborti, I contributed significantly to the study of the Ti-C based ternary alloys phase diagram, funded by a DRDO project.
Venturing into my second post-doctoral role at Emory University, I immersed myself in studying the reaction kinetics of different proteins. Employing liquid helium and nitrogen Mossbauer spectroscopy, along with a 100 mC radioactive source, I received training from Emory Medical School and Hospital's radiological department on using radioactive sources and radiation hazard protection.
In 2006, I initiated my foray into theoretical computational work at BITS Pilani. Here, my focus shifted to studying various hybrid semiconductor nanoclusters, nanotubes, hydrogen storage systems, and other materials using density functional theory. This computational modeling and prediction of novel materials with potential applications have been a cornerstone of my research, culminating in the mentorship of three Ph.D. students in this dynamic field.

Rajasthan farmers benefited from solar water pumps: Study (The Hindu, September 28, 2018)
A scientific study conducted by Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani, has found mismatch between investment in solar energy sources and employment generation in the sector, but has stated that the farmers in Rajasthan have immensely benefited from the solar photovoltaic (SPV) water pumping systems.
The study has also found a significant decline in the consumption of fuel in the agriculture sector. Scientist Krishna M. led the study as the principal investigator of a project funded by the Indian Council of Social Science Research for addressing some distinct aspects of renewable and non-renewable energy sources at micro and macro levels [Excerpt from the article].

India is set to become the youngest country by 2020 (The Hindu, April 18, 2018)
Every third person in an Indian city today is a youth. In about seven years, the median individual in India will be 29 years, very likely a city-dweller, making it the youngest country in the world. India is set to experience a dynamic transformation as the population burden of the past turns into a demographic dividend, but the benefits will be tempered with social and spatial inequalities [Excerpt from the article].

All-solid-state supercapacitors using Li+ ion garnet-polymer hybrid composites (2024-2027) interested may write directly to Prof Anshuman Dalvi
Eligibility: M Sc Physics with 60% marks
Gate/NET/CSIR desirable
Deadline: April 15th, 2024
The project aims to develop all-solid-state supercapacitors using Li+ ion conducting garnet-polymer hybrid membranes as electrolytes, eliminating liquid electrolytes. Garnet-type Li+ ion conductors are considered the most promising solid electrolyte for all-solid-state batteries, and this work aims to incorporate them into all-solid-state supercapacitors. The project involves developing various compositions of garnet polymer hybrids and thoroughly characterizing them. Finally, 2032 and laminated cells will be developed and tested under various temperature and load conditions to assess their performance.
