About Department of Pharmacy

The Department of Pharmacy of BITS Pilani, established in 1950, is one of the few early schools of Pharmacy in India. It has been ranked 3rd in Pharmacy Category by NIRF-2023 (MHRD, Govt. of INDIA). The department offers B. Pharm, M. Pharm (with specializations in Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmacology) as well as Ph.D. programmes. The department is well supported by projects funded by industries and government agencies. In recent years, 10 technologies have been transferred to the pharmaceutical industry and three faculty members have founded their start-ups. Alumni of the department are well placed in India as well as abroad in various Pharmaceutical companies, Government organizations and Academia.

CENTRAL ANIMAL FACILITY(CAF)

CAF at BITS Pilani, Pilani campus is a CCSEA approved facility with a total floor area of 5330 sq. ft. The facility is also approved for in-house breeding of small animals. The facility maintains the various strains of Rats, Mice, Guinea Pigs, Rabbits, and Hamsters. It is also equipped with various maintenance and analytical instruments such as incinerator, Individual Ventilated Cages, double door autoclave, two chambers automated organ bath, laser doppler, noninvasive blood pressure recorder, semi-dry transfer apparatus, microtome, RT-PCR, electroconvulsiometer, actophotometer, analgesiometer, light-dark apparatus, rotarod, surgical anesthesia machine, CO2 chamber, electrical cautery etc.

CAF developed/standardized many animal models and caters to the needs of the various research departments like Pharmacy, Biological Sciences, and Chemistry, etc. The facility also incorporates for carrying out advanced research in the areas of pre-clinical pharmacokinetics, bioavailability studies, pharmacological screening of various synthetic/natural origin drugs.

About Workshop

This training programme  has been specially designed considering the norms/guidelines of CCSEA, Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India, as well as the international standards so that the investigator authorized for carrying out experimental and other scientific procedures on laboratory animals should be adequately educated in animal ethics & welfare, and well trained before performing any animal procedures to avoid unnecessary pain and suffering to the animals before, during and after the procedures.

Objectives

The objectives of the programme are to provide classroom and practical training to improve quality of research conducted on animal models, and to disseminate basic facts and principles to gain knowledge, skills and attitude that are essential for the humane use and care of laboratory animals.
