The Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (BITS Pilani), is a deemed university recognized as an “Institution of Eminence” by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. BITS Pilani is a pioneer in Higher education in all the major disciplines of Engineering and Sciences, with Humanities, Social Sciences, Economics, and Finance in its ambit. The Institute was established in 1964 by the late Shri G. D. Birla, an eminent industrialist, a participant in the Indian freedom struggle, and a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi. The primary aim of BITS Pilani is to advance knowledge and educate students in science, technology, and other areas of scholarship that will best serve the nation and the world in the 21st century. With the launch of India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) during December 2022, there is a huge role to be played by the academic in collaboration with government and industry. This is mainly a two-prong approach:

1. To develop an exhaustive pathway to realize semiconductor design, prototyping, manufacturing and cyber-physical systems

2. To perform pioneering research and innovation in semiconductor domain leading to generate intellectual output and trained workforce

ISM will eventually drive public and private investments, leading to shift the Semiconductor Manufacturing to India. Hence, it is imperative that academic must urgently build research and innovation capacity and capability and create skilled manpower.  With this framework, it is proposed to start a Centre of Excellence in Semiconductor (the “SCoE”) at BITS Pilani. While all the campuses will be involved, the Hyderabad campus will be the pivotal center.
