Syamantak Majumder

Associate Professor, Department of Biological Sciences, BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus

Epigenetics, Vascular Biology
Room No: 3277-R, FD-III,
Department of Biological Sciences,
Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani- 333031, Rajasthan. India.

Dr. Majumder received his PhD from Anna University, Chennai, India (2007-2011) in field of Cell and Vascular Biology and moved to University of Rochester, Rochester, NY, USA as a Post Doctoral Fellow (2011-2014) followed by another Post Doctoral Training at St Michael’s Hospital, University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada (2014-2017). His research work during his graduate studies under Dr. Suvro Chatterjee at Anna University was aimed towards understating the role of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in angiogenesis specially looking at how modulation of nitric oxide signaling could affect angiogenesis during different diseases. Dr. Majumder’s first Post Doctoral Research work under Dr. Bradford C Berk and Dr. Jinjiang Pang at University of Rochester demonstrated how G-protein coupled receptor 2 interacting protein 1 (GIT1) is required for directional migration of endothelial cells towards stimuli to promote tumor angiogenesis. His work also demonstrated a key function of GIT1 in regulating Dll4-Notch1 feedback loop in regulating developmental sprouting angiogenesis. Next, Dr. Majumder moved to Dr. Andrew Advani's lab at St Michael’s Hospital, University of Toronto and started looking at the epigenetics of podocyte in the development of chronic kidney diseases (CKD) specially studying the role of a repressive histone methylation mark in development and progression of CKD. He also identified a long non coding RNA (lncRNA) that is elevated in podocyte of diabetic kidney and contributes to the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy. Dr. Majumder joined BITS-Pilani as an Assistant Professor in Department of Biological Sciences on July 25, 2017.
