Established in July 2004, the Department of Chemistry at BITS, Pilani -KK Birla Goa Campus has marked its presence in Academia within India and abroad. The department is focused in both teaching and high quality research (basic and multidisciplinary) in the frontier areas of chemistry and its interface with allied disciplines. The department is well equipped with state of the art research facilities, library resources (e-journals) and has established collaborations with various national and international laboratories within this short period. The department faculty strength today has grown to 15 (2 professors, 9 Associate professors and 4 Assistant Professors) along with one DST INSPIRE faculty. Currently there are 21 (full time), 1 (part time) research scholars, two post doctoral researcher fellows and 1 post doctoral Woman Scientist working in the department. The department is offering a first degree M.Sc. Chemistry program and the Doctoral program (Ph.D. program). The admission to Ph.D. program is announced twice a year. Institute fellowship is also offered to deserving candidates qualified in the written test and interview.
The department, right from its inception has given high priority for research. The faculty is actively engaged in cutting edge research in the frontier areas of Inorganic, organic, physical, and analytical and theoretical chemistry with further specialisation in Biosensors and bioanalytical chemistry Nanochemistry and nanomaterials Photochemistry and Bioinorganic chemistry Computational and theoretical chemistry Green chemistry and catalysis Molecular sensors and devices Till date, the department has received around 40 sponsored research projects (including three international) from various national and international agencies with funding amounting to more than Rs. 16 crore. The major funding agencies are (Dept. of Science & Technology DST, India, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research CSIR, India, Indian Council for Agricultural Research ICAR & The World Bank, Defence Research and Development Organisation DRDO, Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences BRNS, India, Department of Biotechnology, India, The Swedish Research Council, Sweden, The Royal Academy of Engineering UK, EU-DST,HORIZON. Currently there are 35 research students in the department.
