BITS (Birla Institute of Technology and Science), Pilani is at the forefront of scientific research and Industrial consultancy apart from imparting high quality engineering education.

The state of scientific and technological developments and advancements in any nation can be judged by the quality and extent of research activity in R&D centers and academic institutions in the Nation. Moreover, with the emergence of "Knowledge Society" concept, research and hence knowledge produced has gained paramount importance.

Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani is actively engaged in the pursuit of knowledge through its various Programmes for developing and training highly skilled technical manpower ever since its inception in 1964. Besides contributions from Engineering and Technological groups, there have been significant contribution from Science, Management, Social sciences and Humanistic Studies groups as well. The Humanistic Studies group is actively engaged in improving the quality of rural population.

Several decades of high quality research and teaching work had led to the emergence of well equipped laboratories and other high tech infrastructure which have been sponsored partly by the multinational gaints like Motorola, Tata-IBM, CISCO, NOKIA and several others. These activities and infrastructure that has been developed have been of immense help in carrying out good quality research and maintaining strong ties with industries.

A well organized and systematic approach has been developed for the selection of research scholars, research projects and creation and dissemination of knowledge through workshops, seminars, symposia and training programs organized in BITS. This has resulted in various research papers which got published in National and International journals.

There is active involvement of first degree and higher degree students in research activities. The student projects serve as useful inputs to various research activities. A science and technology exhibition is organized by students under the banner of a technological festival called 'APOGEE' and it forms an important part of our research activities.

Research at BITS is a component of an integrated activity encompassing teaching as well as its linkages with the outside world of Academia and Industry. A large number of students at all levels in the three-tier structure of the Educational Programmes are involved in research. At the first-degree level, a one-semester full-time thesis-seminar course and at higher degsree level dissertation course offer excellent opportunities to bright students to be involved in research. In the Doctoral Programme, a large number of Ph.D students located on-campus, off-campus or at outside centers, are engaged in research work in the various research areas. The Institute's linkages with Industries, R&D Centers and other institutions in the country and abroad have given a further thrust to research activities of the Institute.
