Laboratories

All the Mechanical Engineering laboratories have spacious rooms and provided with latest infrastructure. Following are the laboratories of the Department:

Material Testing Laboratory:

  1. Computerized 100 kN Electro-mechanical UTM with temperature attachment
  2. Computerized 3000 kgf Brinell Hardness Testing machine
  3. Manual and electronic readout Impact Testing Machine for Charpy and Izod tests
  4. Bowers fully automatic micro-hardness testing machine
  5. Meiji metallurgical microscope with digital photography and polishing machine
  6. Erichsen cupping test for sheet metal formability
  7. Modsonic ultrasonic non-destructive testing machine
  8. Digital Rockwell hardness testing machine

Heat Transfer Laboratory:

  1. Thermal conductivity apparatus by guarded hot plate method
  2. Fin effectiveness apparatus
  3. Thermal conductivity of insulating powder
  4. Heat transfer in natural convection
  5. Heat transfer in forced convection
  6. Emissivity measurement apparatus
  7. Stefan Boltzmann apparatus
  8. Critical heat flux apparatus
  9. Dropwise and filmwise condensation apparatus
  10. Parallel flow and counter flow heat exchanger

Fluid Machines Laboratory:

  1. Pelton wheel turbine test rig (3kW) with mechanical dynamometer
  2. Francis turbine test rig (3kW) with mechanical dynamometer
  3. Kaplan turbine test rig (3kW) with mechanical dynamometer (to be installed soon)
  4. Centrifugal pump test rig (multi-stage, variable speed)
  5. Reciprocating pump test rig
  6. Axial fan test rig
  7. Impact of jet on vanes
  8. Losses due to friction in pipe lines
  9. Losses due to pipe fittings, sudden enlargement and contraction

Internal Combustion Engines Laboratory:

  1. Single cylinder two stroke petrol engine test rig
  2. Computerized single cylinder four stroke petrol engine test rig
  3. Twin cylinder four stroke water cooled diesel engine test rig
  4. Computerized single cylinder four stroke water cooled diesel engine test rig
  5. Double stage air compressor test rig
  6. Cut section model of Maruti 800 engine
  7. Model of hydraulic brake unit (single brake drum)

Center for Product Design and Realization:

  1. LS-DYNA non-linear finite element simulation software
  2. Design Expert DOE software
  3. DELL Quad-core Workstation
  4. Pro/Engineer Wildfire 4.0
  5. Rank Taylor Hobson computerized surface roughness profilometer

Computer Aided Manufacturing Laboratory:

  1. Hadinge/Bridgeport GX600 CNC Vertical Machining Center

Engineering Tribology Laboratory:
  1. Pin-on-disc tribometer
  2. DELL quad-core workstation for simulation of machining
 

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON WIND ENERGY: MATERIALS, ENGINEERING AND POLICIES

NOV 22-23, 2012, BITS PILANI, HYDERABAD CAMPUS

Renewable energy sources have become a necessity rather than a choice and there is a huge potential for wind energy but there is a lot to be perfected in all aspects. Particularly most regions of many countries including India are classified as low wind energy regimes necessitating identification of appropriate models for estimation and realization of potentials, site selection, new materials such as composites, new techniques of manufacturing, and policy making. This conference is aimed at providing a platform for discussion and dissemination of knowledge through the participation of all stake holders also leading to certain recommendations on future course of action.

Achievements

1. Dr. N. S. K. Reddy got ABG seed grant in nano-lubrication in machining.
2. Almost 100% of the first semester on-campus final year students of BE (Hons)(Mechanical Engineering) are already placed in different companies, many of them in the core mechanical engineering companies. Several students have presented their project work in different International conferences.
