Overview

The department of Humanities and Management offers both compulsory and elective courses in Humanistic studies, Social sciences, English, Technical Communication, Professional Communication, Mass Media, and Management to the students of First Degree and Higher Degree. With its well-qualified faculty members, the department participates in various training programmes, conferences, workshops, research projects, sports etc. with commitment and dedication. The department aims at enriching the knowledge and awareness of students in various areas of humanistic and management studies and enhancing their management and communication skills thereby enabling them to become well-rounded human beings and to excel in their professional and personal lives.

Research

Faculty members carry out and guide research in the following areas:

English language and literature, Mass media, Professional Communication, Soft Skills, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, Public Policy, Marketing, Sales and Services Management, Human Resource, Production and operations Management, Strategic Management .

Three faculty members are pursuing research and working towards Ph.D. degrees of the Institute. Research proposals have been and are being submitted to ICSSR, UGC, Planning Commission, etc.., to attract financial support. Faculty members have guided and are guiding Ph.D. students of both BITS and other Institutions and also act Ph.D. examiners and paper setters for various universities.

Faculty

The Department has twelve faculty members with 75% of them being Ph.D.s. There are six faculty members in English, Communication and Media Studies; four in Management and two in Social Sciences. With one Professor, eight Assistant professors and three lecturers, the Department is not only involved in teaching courses but also contribute to the Institute’s administration by actively participating in its various activities related to PR, Publications, Practice School, Academic Counseling, general administration, etc. Faculty members publish research papers in reputed national and international journals, publish books, present papers in conferences; act as members of editorial board and advisory committees of BITS and also external institutions.

Courses

The Department offers courses in Professional and Technical Communication , Mass Media studies, Literature, Foreign languages, Professional ethics, Sociology, Entrepreneurship, Human Resources, Organizational Behavior, Marketing, Advertising, Supply Chain Management, International Business, etc.

New Electives

  • Product and Brand Management

    The course will provide students with an appreciation of the role of branding and  will augment students’ ability to think creatively and critically about the strategies and tactics involved in building, leveraging, defending, and sustaining inspired brands.

  • Literary Criticism

    This course examines the works of some major literary theorists and critics from the mid-19th century to more recent times. This course will enable you to understand the broader ways in which literary theory applies to our culture. It discusses different approaches to the reading and writing of cultural texts, especially literary ones. As part of the course we will be discussing  the work of some major literary theorists beginning from Aristotle to twentieth-century theories and applications like Psychoanalytic, Marxist, reader-response, New historicist, feminist, postcolonial, structuralist and post-structuralist perspectives.
