Date Event
1901 Seth ShivNarainji Birla starts a 'Patshala' in Pilani with one teacher for educating his grandsons, late Shri GD Birla and late Shri RD Birla.
1925 - 1929 The 'Patshala' gathers strength, and evolves to become a High School and later on an Intermediate College.
1943 - 1947
The Birla Education Trust was founded. The IntermediateCollege was converted into a Degree college, and later on started post-graduate courses.
1947 - 1952
Higher level courses in Pharmacy, Arts and Commerce make their way into the Pilani campus
1964
Birla Institute of Technology and Science was incepted as an Institute with Dr. G. D. Birla as Founder Chairman.
1964 - 1970
Benefiting from the Ford Foundation Grant, the University was developed in association with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA. This led to the adoption of many practices common amongst western colleges
1983
Dr. KK Birla took over as Chairman of BITS and expanded the university infrastructure, faculty and student body
1999
Realizing a greater need for quality graduates in Engineering and Sciences, BITS increased its student capacity from 2500 to 4000.
2000
BITS open a branch in Dubai making it the first Indian university with an overseas campus
2004
With the very best in facilities and infrastructure, BITS Goa opens its doors to the student community.
2008
Upon being invited by the Government of Andhra Pradesh, BITS added another feather to its cap by starting a campus in Hyderabad. The Hyderabad Campus started its operations in 2008.

Achievements

  • Robot Shaurya wins several accolades

    Robot Shaurya, developed by a duo  BITSian team comprising  Mr. Akash Mohan Singhal and Mr. Aditya Shanker Raghuwanshi, won accolades in Robocup 2011 held in Istambul (July 2011), in Intel India Embedded Challenge  2011  held in Bangalore (August 2011)  and in DRDO Student Robot Competition 2010 held in Chennai (October 2010). 

  • Paper presentation in International Conference

    Mr Rwitajit Majumdar, a M. E. Student, presented a paper titled, Simulation of Planar Wave Flagellar Propulsion of Nanorobots using Comsol at the 7th Annual COMSOL Conference 2011, held at Boston (US)  on 13-15 October 2011.

  • Efficycle 2011 Prize

    Students led by Saurabh Ahuja ( Team Captain) won overall 2nd position in Efficycle 2011, organized by Society of Automotive Engineers Northern India Chapter  during 14 - 16 October 2011. BITSian team designed a three  tyred multi rider hybrid vehicle that runs  both on human effort and batteries.
