Salters’ Chemistry Camp India at BITS, Pilani
20 July 2016
A three-day programme of residential Chemistry Camp for 9th Standard students is being organized by the Royal Society of Chemistry, India and Salters’ Camps, UK at Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, Rajasthan during 18th - 20th July, 2016. Sixty-five students from 15 government/less-privileged schools in and around Pilani are participating in this Chemistry Camp that will enable students to participate in learning Chemistry with fun and motivate them to develop a long-term interest in the subject of Chemistry besides creating an awareness.
The Salters’ Chemistry Camp was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Prof. Souvik Bhattacharyya, Vice Chancellor, BITS Pilani, who encouraged and motivated the students. He said an interest at this stage to gain knowledge and skills will enable students to continue study chemistry at university level and to make positive contribution towards the country, which will be a mark of success of this progam. Prof. Ashoke Kumar Sarkar, Director, BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus and Prof. S.C. Sivasubramaniam, Dean, Administration, BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus, Prof. Chandra Sekhar, Prof. V.K. Dube, Director Pilani Resource Centre (PRC), Pilani, and other faculty members were present. All of them expressed their happiness over association of BITS Pilani with the Royal Society of Chemistry and Salters Institute to hold Salters’ Chemistry Camp in Pilani.
During the inauguration, Ms. Bhakti Dhamdhere, the representative of Royal Society of Chemistry on behalf of Sir John Holman, Chairman, Salters’ Institute and president-elect, Royal Society of Chemistry said “The Salters’ Chemistry Camps have been very successful in the UK as a way of sparking interest and enthusiasm among young people for the future study of chemistry. The Royal Society of Chemistry and the Salters’ Institute are pleased to have this opportunity to extend the Salters Camps’ concept to India in this pilot program. We are most grateful to Dr Yusuf Hamied for his generosity in making this pilot program possible, and we note with pleasure that Dr. Hamied’s own enthusiasm for Chemistry was stimulated at Cambridge by Lord Todd, a distinguished member of the Salters’ Company.”
The Salters’ Chemistry Camps India is part of the project - “Inspirational Chemistry Programme” in India and has been supported by Dr Yusuf Hamied, a leading Indian philanthropist and pioneer in the pharmaceutical industry. Dr Hamied has committed Rs. 8 crore for this five-year program, which includes training school teachers as well.
"Salters’ Chemistry Camp" is an excellent idea to motivate underprivileged school children to learn chemistry, and to aspire them to become successful chemists in future. Salters’ Chemistry Camps provide an action-packed programme which will include hands-on practical activities in University labs, exciting chemical demonstrations, the chance to meet like-minded students and a distinct experience of life staying in University hostels. Importantly, the Camp activities will be delivered in a local language in addition to English. The aim of the Camps is to provide the most enthusiastic year, 9th standard students from diverse backgrounds an opportunity to explore practical aspects of Chemistry and inspire them to pursue Chemistry at University and further.
This is the fourth Salters’ Chemistry Camp in 2016, with previous camps completed a few days earlier in North East India at the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (5th-7th July 2016) and at the North East Institute of Science and Technology (CSIR-NEIST), Jorhat-Assam (11th-13th July 2016) respectively. The first camp of 2016 was held at National Institute of Technology, Kozhikode, Kerala in April. Earlier in 2015, four chemistry camps were held at - Indian Institute of Science Bangalore, Agastya Creativity Campus-Kuppam, Vellore Institute of Technology-Vellore and Indian Institute of Science Education and Research - Pune.
Three additional Chemistry Camps have been planned in 2016 and in line the next Salters’ Chemistry Camp is to be conducted at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Mohali (25th-27th July 2016). The other two camps for 2016 are planned at the Agastya International Foundation, Kuppam – Andhra Pradesh (Sept 2016) and Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune (December 2016).
Finally, in the inauguration of the program today, Dr Anil Kumar, Associate Professor & Head, Department of Chemistry at Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS) Pilani, Pilani Campus proposed a vote of thanks.
